Free software combinations

I recently bought a laptop and I can't afford to pay for McAfee this year so I'm trying to organise a good combo of free software. I uninstalled the Norton anti-virus that came bundled with the computer and installed AVG. Am I right in thinking that AVG is not enough by itself? I also downloaded Comodo firewall but just wanted to check with you guys to see if these programs are good to combine. I didn't see anything in AVG that mentioned a firewall so I'm guessing I still need one. Should I download any more programs after these two? Or will I be covered with a AVG and a firewall? Thanks in advance.
