A Mad Question About DNA And Genetics

Just a mad question - moving on from mention of the Spear of Destiny (see the present pope thread).

If there was blood and or DNA found on such an object, like in Jurassic Park (Yes, I know its fiction), is it or will it be possible to bring back some day in the future, a clone of someone?

Just one of those mad questions that I allow to wander into my empty brain! :pac:

Anyone know much or enough about this stuff to answer?

I'm sure if the technology existed it could be done.

    I've another brain teaser.

Why is there an advertisement for the scripts new cd appearing on all my Inspiral Carpets clips on youtube.

    LOL no.
Maybe the person that got the ball rolling that exposed him though.
That persons work is not done with the rest that followed Charlie. :pac:

Why not? It's been done on sheep before.

    Also, twins are clones.

Whatever was in the amber clad insect as in Jurrasic Park, is long gone. Bacteria would have digested it. Various acids and stuff as the insect decomposed would have destroyed it.

Even if you had something like a frozen mammoth that was preserved in permafrost, it would be very difficult. The dna in the cells could have broken into strips and linkingthose strips back into something meaningful would be almost impossible. Ice crystals in the cells would have kind of destroy things.

Japanese scientists tried it before. They tried to fertilse a mammoth egg and plant it in an elephant as a surrogate. (Mammoth was partially frozen in permafrost in Siberia.) No success.

    Cheers for the good reply.
Did it fail partly due to the surrogate and not just of the technology not being there yet to allow it to happen?

100 years from now, it might be a different ball game I sometimes wonder!

If there was the blood of Christ on such an item, and if it could be used to clone Jesus then this clone would be an abomination of life, declared by the Church the Anti-Christ and mad **** would go down. Cats and dogs would play poker together, toilets would all drain in the oppostive direction etc

According to Christian mythology the zombie carpenter has already come back once.

This was before Dolly, either in the 80s or the early 90s, I think.

However when I gave a quick search for it, I found a more recent article and a more recent team. They seem hopeful, but I'm still not sure you could get a good DNA sample.

We could bring back all the members of your kibbutz who could go around and build windfarms, protect dogs from fireworks, sort out the economy and hold in their farts so as to protect the environment.

    sorry

I think you would still need a suitable surrogate species that is a quite a close match to the species that you are trying to recreate.

Another argument I have seen raised is that for any ancient creature, other organisms that it would have symbiotically depended on for survival (very specific types of gut bacteria for example etc) would be likely long gone as well.

The thing with a drop of blood that's a couple of hundred (or thousand) years old is that it'll be all decayed and hard to decipher.
Although they did manage to map the DNA of Neanderthals so there's some hope yet. I'd give it another 20 years.
