Go to HTC.com and touch the screen, if the grey images or menu bars turn pink it's AMOLED. :D

It's not a joke, did you try it? The AMOLED screens have a well documented issue displaying greys, funnily enough it stands out most on HTCs own website, not sure why touching the screen affects it, but it does.

Try it on the lower 'overview' menu bar on htc.com.

Yeah I tried it and you're right.

I've noticed before that while holding down on an image to drag or zoom, the levels of black (or indeed grey) change and the image becomes a lot blockier as if the bit depth is reduced. I always figured it was done on purpose to speed up rendering of the image as its size changes... didn't think it would be an issue with the screen!

You might be right there, and AFAIK it's only the Amoled screens that display some greys with a pinkish hue.

It's almost unnoticeable on anything but the lowest brightness settings though. On the lowest settings it looks almost as if the screen has a pink filter applied over it.

Argh, even looking at that with one eye closed and the other squinting it hurt!

Turn of all the lights and load up an image with a black background. If you can see the background, it ain't AMOLED.
