Hiya. Just wondering if anyone has spent their honeymoon here, in particular - Cancun? Any advice appreciated - how did you find it? Thanks :)

Hi nimhbal, I think you'll get better responses here than in tLL :)

Hi Nimhbal, I was in Cancun a few years ago (not on honeymoon, but with my hubby). Tbh, I don't think i'd recommend it. It's an awful long way to travel for what is basically a standard beach holiday. Cancun is a real 'resort' and I felt that it was much the same as any resort in Spain, Portugal or the likes only 3 times as far away and far more expensive. We ended up taking a lot of (expensive) day trips to get away from Cancun and the whole pool scene.

If you fancy going to that part of the world, we went to Cuba on honeymoon and spent 10 days in a beach resort and 4 nights in Havanna. Much more culture and history in Cuba, we felt it had a lot more going for it and was a lot cheaper for food and drink too. SO I would recommend Cuba over Mexico any day.

    I like Cancun.

If you go All Inclusive in your resort it works out great value. Yeah you do all your eating there but they all have 5/6 restaurants so you are not in the same place all the time.

Much cheaper and almost as luxurious than the Barbados, Antigua, Maldives etc.

I would put it above Spain, Portugal in terms of luxury. But below the above destinations.

There are some good cultural things to visit as well: Chitzen Itza, Mayan Ruins. Fun stuff like jungle tours where you can zip line and abseil into a cenote (and then swim in the Cenote - amazing)

Cancun itself, can be a bit mad - great for partying :-) If you find it too much you may end up stayinig in your resort alot, which i find very relaxing. And hey, isn't that what you are going for???

Don't get me wrong, we had a great time and as mentioned in the above post, there are some amazing day trips (though they were quite pricey). We just felt that Cancun itself was a bit tacky and full of drunken Irish/British/Americans. I have heard that Playa Del Carmen (an hour or so south of Cancun) is much nicer and a bit classier and quieter. You would still have the great beach and day trips, but it might be a bit more romantic and classy for a honeymoon. I would recommend you look at staying there before you book.

    We've booked this:

    http://www.grandpalladiumwhitesandresorts.com/

We played around with American road trips and stuff but there would have been too much uncertainty and it would have cost maybe even more than two weeks 5* all inclusive luxury. It's probably the only time we're gonna do that kinda holiday so might as well do it right. We looked at places like Cuba and Dominican republic which were cheaper but apparently there's not much to do outside of the resort.. but there's more in Mexico.

I really really really really can't wait :D We're going a few weeks after the wedding too which saved us over £600 and at least we've got something to look forward to afterwards.

I think it depends were you stay. My FSIL spent her honeymoon in Cancun and she goes back whenever she can.

I'd recommend if you decide to go a hotel called Gran Melia. Its a 5 star resort and you can either opt for a normal room or the ones in a part called "red level" which is sort of like a VIP part of the hotel, adults only. I stayed in the one in Tenerife with H2B this summer and it was by far the best hotel we've ever been to. You get your own butler, reserved huge leather bed with white curtains around the pool, you get brought snacks, smoothies, cold towels, etc throughout the day. Whenever you go for a swim they change you towels so you can have a dry one when you come out. I was sick during the trip and could not go out for dinner, or go to the clubs in the hotel at night so the staff brought a dvd player to our room with loads of dvds without us ever asking...I mean, you didn't even have time to want anything because they catered for it before you could even think about it.

We got a room with a jacuzzi in the balcony which they got ready every night for us with petals...I couldnt recommend it enough! My FSIL has stayed in both the one in Tenerife and Cacun, and she said the are both pretty similar in service. She also says she would not recommend Riviera Maya or Playa del Carmen as it has grown very popular lately and the hotels would not be as nice (they are usually cheaper too).
