I enjoyed reading the thread started yesterday about what people are up to and it got me thinking about starting this thread......

They say it's the small things that make us happiest........so

What's the 'small thing' in farming this week that made you smile/happy?

Mine was (at long last) getting a new top link for our old MF135 :D (no more wrestling and cursing while I'm trying to adjust it now! The damn thing was too long anyways, 165 one me thinks:rolleyes:)

Seeing cattle sent away killing out better than had been anticipated. Haven't seen the cheque / kill sheet yet so the smile hasn't turned into a frown yet! Seeing finer weather with good grass still in evidence.

Watching a new born calf getting up and drinking the cow.
    Never ceases to amaze me.
Like as if it's brain has been programmed to find the teats.

When the vet passes the hand over the last animal in the crush at the herd test and says "all clear". :D:D:D

THE big thing I miss most from my livestock days is lurking in the shrubbery with the calving kit at my side, in the early light of a fresh Spring morning, watching a cow deliver a strong healthy calf all by herself, and then watching the calf get its feet and start to suckle.
I'd creep away and treat myself to a fine breakfast, congratulating myself on a fine morning's work, having done nothing but sit in the bushes and watch.

I'm choking up a bit just thinking about it. :o

Lodging a cheque that brought the overdraft bank ac back under its limit with about 100e to spare!

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Opened up an old drain, spent today spraying rushes. Pretty happy with that, thinking ahead to how the place will look!

    Were they flying inland?
A real sign of bad weather coming!

Or maybe they were leaving the country, like a lot of young people these days.

This morning when I was out with the cows, four swans did a fly past on their way somewhere in perfect formation against a bright blue sky. Beautiful.

Why do swans make that sound when they fly? Is it their wings?
