This is for anybody who was 'being considered' for this award and who got the letter last month.

Have you heard anything since you replied?
Do you know when we get told if we are successful or not?

I got 550, I think you also have to have a medical card to qualify.

Did you have to apply for this or is it awarded automatically?

It might be because we're repeats, I know I was exempt from a few smaller scholarships as a result. :( Wah.

Edit: and before anyone jumps down my throat, yeah I can see why it might be unfair to include repeats, it's just irritating/frustrating.

Oh don't worry, I'm the same myself. Seriously, I'm going grey worrying about money, I even have to borrow the cash for my bus ticket up! Bad times. I want to ring someone up and complain about this. :p

I emailed loads of people trying to get an appeal or something. Even the tanaiste (she's officially the head of it and handles all final decisions). She gave me and email of the right person who decided to not reply!

My phone is broken at the moment (yay more expense! Might be getting my sister's old one though), so I'd use mammy's phone I suppose. :p

If the grant would even come through sometime before April, it would be very helpful. Grr.

^Could you forward me the email address via PM? You usually can't expect a reply at the weekends anyway, which I always forget.

You realise they only award this scholarship to about 3 people per province right? Even at that it's given on a case by case basis and awarded from the minster of Education themselves. My boyfriend was awarded this but had 570 points and had to spend 90 minutes commuting to and from college a day per week.

The scholarship's not designed to put people through college, the maintenance grant system is, despite it's flaws. You'll also find little sympathy when you have computer facilities, a well stocked library and additional support provided by HEAR.

Additional support? Hardly huge let's be honest. And, I'm pretty sure if it was fairly given out I'd have a good shot at it. Don't see how my repeating should influence someone's view as to whether I need extra cash or not.

Bit hard to survive on the grant and the super large 600 euro from the HEAR programme no?

It is but I mean that's student life. Learning to budget and manage your finances efficiently will hopefully help you manage on whatever money you receive. Most students are in the same boat, struggling to get by on what they've earned over the summer or whatever grant they've received. Some families that come in at just above the cut off point for the maintenance grant could do with the money just as much as some that do qualify. And €600 is a nice sum from HEAR, it's not to be scoffed at. There's a lot you can do with that.

Sorry if I seem ungrateful or whatever, just frustrated about the whole if you repeat you can't get any of the larger grants. Doesn't make sense...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,768 ✭✭✭almostnever

I can understand where they're coming from though. If you missed out on it last year, say, because a repeat student got it and there were only two available, it'd be unfair to you as they had three years as opposed to two to get adequate results. So even if it is frustrating, it's not really unfair as such.

Yeah but I think the thing is that it is not a grant. It's a scholarship. There's a difference.

I don't think the awarding of the scholarship has anything to do with trinity. At least that's the impression I got from reading the letters my friend got about it.

Probably the Welfare Officer in the students union would be the one to contact about financial aid etc

This is exactly what I was trying to get at, that €600 can be used in a large manner of ways. €600 pays for your commute to college via bus for 7.5 months. I know plenty of students who're on grants/HEAR and are content with the amount they receive as the support is adequate. Myself and many other students are on grants and manage just fine. You need to learn to budget. If like myself, you find you want or need more money start looking for christmas work now.

As another poster said it's a scholarship not a grant. Appealing the process will do little to influence whether you'll get it or not.

Do without it so, and see how you manage. HEAR give as much as they can; the cuts in their funding over the past few years have made that more difficult.
Besides, I'm sure HEAR would be delighted to give it someone who was a bit more grateful for their help.
And, I'm pretty sure if it was fairly given out I'd have a good shot at it. Don't see how my repeating should influence someone's view as to whether I need extra cash or not.

Are you implying that it's not fairly given out just because you didn't get it? If a scholarship was given to you at the expense of someone who did their LC only once, then that wouldn't exactly be fair would it?
I'm not trying to criticise you for repeating your LC; that takes dedication and a lot of effort. The downside (aswell as an extra year of school and having to do the damn thing twice, of course) is that you've had two cracks of the whip, and therefore won't have priority when it comes to scholarships.

So you're a bit short of money - welcome to 3rd level. You have to learn to deal with it. Lots of students are in a similar position to you.

Why doesn't it make sense? You've done it twice. If you're up against a student who's only done it once, it's only fair that they would get priority.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you got your course. Do well in that and I'm sure there will be plenty of financial rewards later in life. You can get by without a scholarship - learning to budget and be wise with money is all part of student life.

I regret that rant fest now actually. The initial lack of money that comes with student life was looming over me. Sorry if I annoyed anyone etc:rolleyes::)

If you go to TCD this should cheer you up,
    David
There was a delay in Trinity confirming registration. However we received that this week and all Trinity payments have now been processed.
The amount of € 1,500 will be lodged electronically to your bank account on 8th November. This will cover Sep & Oct. We will start making the payments for November next week.
    Regards

    Fiona

There was something about keeping your academic grades up in the offer letter,it said that they'd keep in contact with the college and the scholarship could be revoked if they weren't up to sandard! I took that as failing! Cool thanks! :D
