Sorry for ANOTHER sex related thread but...........

So, i recently found that an old childhood friend of mine is now a stripper. And has been for quie some time!

Now, although she's a childhood friend and it doesn't really bother me, i definately wouldn't like my girlfriend, sister or anyone i really care about to take their clothes off for money.

Same with "glamour modelling" or whatever you call it, it's taking your clothes off for money.

No matter what these girls would say to defend it, i still consider it selling themselves
dare i say it.... just as a hooker would

So what do AHers think of this? if you met someone for the first time and after a couple of hours they told you they were a stripper, would you treat them differently?

Would I treat them differently? Nope.

I've known a couple of women who work in the industry, it's a tough gig.

Why would you treat them differently? It wouldn't be what I'd chose to do to make a living, but I could list hundreds of things I wouldn't work at, but I wouldn't treat the people who did them differently. I like to judge people on who they are, not on what their job is.

I would disagree with their life-choice but I would never try to stop them from doing what they want as long as they weren't impacting other people. Let people do what they want!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,698 ✭✭✭✭Princess Peach

Right I rethought that thre. And I don't think my problem is so much with the strippers as with the people who go to see them.

I went to a male strip show and the women were going crazy, the guys up on stage dancing and stripping and calling up volunteers, great atmosphere!

And I went to a female strip club. They barely let me in the door. Then it was just girls walking around in their underwear trying to get the guys to pay for private rooms. No fun at all!

I think its different in other countries where the girls dance on stage but not here

But someones job is a reflection of their lifestyle no?

And what they do for a living is a huge part of their life, don't you think?

Is it any more degrading than working in a call centre, chained to a headset taking abuse from people who are just taking their frustrated existence out on you for minimum wage?

I don't have to make that choice right now thank god but I used to work in a debt-collection call centre back in college. If it came down to it that or the pole, it would be a tough choice..:p

Thankfully the good lord has blessed me with a body that will mean I never have to consider resorting to stripping for money.

But y'know, if a guy makes his money getting it off in front of an appreciative crowd then who am I to say that he's wrong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭Mrmoe

I do not see a problem with it as long as the person does it willingly and knows the consequences of that line of work. I would trust a stripper over some professions any day such as bankers and politicians. I think anybody who brings a bit of happiness and pleasure into this world through their work is fine in my book.

What do i think of strippers, its a job i suppose, have done the complusary strip club thing on a lads holidays, didn't go for the private dance though. Any of the ones I was in were not seedy like the movies/tv make them out to be. Seemed very civilised, Was just like a late bar, with a few girls walking around in their under wear chating to some of the customer/punters and ocasionally doing a tease dance only taking their top off. Private dances were of course available for an extra charge. Overall, place seemed very respectable. Both guys and girls (they were allowed in) haveing a drink and socialising like they would in any other bar.

Have seen the oposite though in clubs or at stags where say a stripper is brought in for the evening, in these cases has usally turned seedy or disrespectble with almost leering and loutish behavour.

Funny that. Any time I go to a strip club there is always women in there. Usually a hen party or just a gang of women out for a laugh.

Apparently a lot of strippers these days have college degrees.
I guess Id be ok if someone had done it to support themselves between jobs or something, but If it was a friend or something Id still encourage them to find something else...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,006 ✭✭✭MistyCheese

I think, I think, that they strip.

    Anything else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

    It's only entertainment.
They make a few quid titillating people. Fair play to them.

I'd say the same for glamour models too.
Whether you like it or not, there will always me a market for it. Our hormones are not going to disappear any time soon.

If you want to go down the moral road, then I'd counter it by saying that you cannot deny human sexuality.

I'd also like to see prostitution legalised and properly regulated like it is in Amsterdam, Nevada and a few other places.

I dont think its a big deal at all, but imo going completely naked when theres young and old people around is a step too far. Have been to a series of 21st where "the lads" book the same foreign stripper who gets down to her birthday suits and sits in the face of her apparently lucky birthday boys. Not much of a problem until you see the poor granny or niece looking on like

Other than that, its only a body, we all know what they look like and half the girls at parties are dressed just a tad more than the strippers imo! If I had the bod id do it myself!! ;)

A lot of supposedly normal jobs involve annoying, deceiving or pestering other people. If somebody want to take off their clothes (and is not being coerced) for a living, more power to them.

Same with the sex industry and modelling.

Perfectly logical way of making money IMO. You've got a highly commoditisable (if that's even a word) asset, you make money out of it - you won't have it forever anyway. If I was living in London or somewhere else really big and anonymous and I had a body like your one the spinning ballerina that appears on the top right here, I'd seriously consider it. There could be sleaze-bag clients though, which would be off-putting, and I'd imagine it can be embarrassing at times when doing a private dance, but the latter is probably something a person learns to deal with, and any establishment that treats its employees well wouldn't allow for any uber-sleaziness.

What about if the "asset" was their vagina. Still of the same opinion?

Absolutely. While it would have to be the depths of desperation that would cause me to resort to prostitution, I'm not all women.

I distinguish between what a stripper/dancer does and what a hooker does. One is eroticism, even art and appreciation of female form. The other is - not.

Pointedly what would I think of a loved one stripping? Thats a tough one. I wouldn't like it. But if they were happy doing it and they were not in some run down dive where patrons can essentially harrass and grope at and violate her then I would probably be at peace about it.

I don't think so, it's their life and their choice and they're not hurting anyone or themselves are they? can't see why I would treat them differently. I knew someone who ended up working in a sex shop, but that didn't change my opinion of him.

Well I really dont understand why everyone has a problem with female strippers, I have known quite a few and they tend to be while some might not have been the brightest, But saying that they all have done it of there own free will and enjoy what they do. Would i look down on them hell no, There making a living and paying tax and there is no touchy.:P But in saying that I would not let my other half do it.;)

Would love to go out with a stripper. They are usually hot, there is no chance of them getting out of shape and i like the fact that lots of people want to ride my girlfriend but only i can

They don't take off their knickers in this country...they only show tits!

It's a f*cking disgrace of the highest order. I seen more minge in Coppers than Lapellos.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,122 ✭✭✭DerekDGoldfish

ive been in two strip clubs in my life
One in Malta was free in, drinks were €2 and there were loads of hot women
One in ireland was €10 in, drinks €7.50 and the women were bet down.

Both however were slezzy places I felt uncomfortable in, but at least the one in Malta had cheep drink.

edit. I just realised I had really answered the question, while I repect anyone right to work in whatever feild they see fit I would by lying if I said I wouldnt think less of sombody I know for working in one.

    Serious reply.

If someone is stripping to earn a living/support a family I have a lot of respect for them. If they are stripping to buy drugs/drink I put them on a pedestal above rapists, thieves, lawers, politicians, power hungry civil servants and other dregs of society.,

    ...to stroke?

Either how, if she's doing it by her choice and not forced into it, I wouldn't have a problem knowing someone who had become involved in lapdancing.

I've been to a few clubs in Ireland and found'em quite expensive. Been to 1 in Chicago and suprised by how much more relaxed and cheaper they were over there.

Either how, I consider it more of a prefrence thing. Your either comfortable with it or not.

On a side note... I found it hilarious when people complained about Stringfellows when the club that was there before was also a Strip Club and that there was another open on the other side of O'Connell Street at the same time... no complaints there :P (Can't remember the name of that second club but it was about a 10 min walk from Stringfellows)
