    Hey,

for the last 3 years Ive been driving a 98 1.6 Avensis. She is really on her last legs these days, water pump is leaking and will need new tires within the next year.

I have max 10k to spend, but would prefer around the 8k mark.
Want to move to a 1.4-1.6 as the tax is a killer. Insurance might also drop a bit (I'm 32)
So it needs to be a similar sized car, 4 door saloon with a large boot.
It will have kids in the back also, so cant be too tiny.
Ive mainly been looking at Skodas (Octavia/Superb etc) and the Volvo s40, but the boot seems smaller?

Any other ideas I could look at? Obviously reliability and value for money are key.

    Cheers

A 1.6 Focus maybe worth a look, you're going to have trouble finding something most suitable then the skoda though, if you like the car I'd find a good one and go with it.

If you have 10k to spend, what difference does an extra €169 Motor Tax a year in buying a 1.9-2.0L Diesel make?

I dont exactly have the 10k lying around, it would certainly be a stretch.
What would you recommend in a diesel?

Depends how long you are planning to keep it does it not ? Also its entirely possible for annual tax rates to go up, meaning its better to be in the lowest bracket you can.

Over 10 years an extra €169 is still only 17% of his budget. You also can't base a purchase on vague future possibilities.
Greebo, there's a million threads on people looking for recommendations for a diesel for any figure between 2k and 10k, have a search and you'll find a thread to suit your budget. No matter how much you're willing to spend, you'll be able to buy something. Just don't limit your search because of an extra €169 motor tax!

I would be looking to keep the car for at least 7 years or more...i.e. until it dies.
I need a new car, but dont need to spend 10k and would prefer not to, but dont want to buy something cheap thats unreliable and needs money spent on parts each year (Which is what the avensis is doing now)

a mate just got a C4 hatch back 08 up north an it came in at €10,500 including vrt and is only €150 a year tax as it's a 1.6 diesel.
Worth a look if you can stretch now to an 08 diesel as you save in the long run over a 03-04 petrol.

not really, you'll have a good 03-04 petrol yoke for 3 or 4k, which as you know is 6 or 7 k less than 10k.

You'll buy a lot of car tax over the coming years with that saving.;)

I'd recommend the Octavia or Superb diesels, good solid cars, plenty of space for the kids, very reliable and great value.

    How does this one look?
    Skoda Superb
    2006 Skoda Superb 1.8 150 BHP Exclusive T, Saloon, Beige, Petrol, Manual, 4 Door,78000km.NCT 25-04-2012,TAX-01-11, 17 alloys,4*new tyres,electric window,central locking,alarm,8*air bags,air conditioning,climate control,cd player,traction control,bluetooth phone,and mach more.full service history

I guess it would need a timing belt/water pump done?

Hey OP could you not just spend a couple of hundred euro on a water pump and tires rather than spend 10k on a new car...

Hey lads I'm looking to buy a car off my Dad in the next year - He's offering me a decent deal on it €8,000 for the following spec

    ~2006 Ford Focus Saloon
    ~1.6tdi
    ~50,000km
    ~16" Alloys
~1 owner so far (he bought it new)

Now I'm just after starting a new job, the moneys not great but it's still a start seeing as I'm a graduate (22) I'm wondering if Insurance will cripple me on this seeing as I'm under 25 and it's a 1.6 - the car I have at the moment gets me from a-b but I need a sturdy car like this.

I'm half wondering if I'll be able to afford 8k even though it's a good deal for me, would I be better going for a cheaper car with more miles and more owners or am I saving myself hassle in the long run seeing as I know my dad hasn't had any trouble out of this car, I know the fuel economy is good etc. ?

It's a bit of a stupid post I'll admit but I'm just stuck on what to do - the cars I've checked online don't appear to be much better value so what do ye think??

    Err thread hijack?

Current car is 12+ years old and shows it. Seals around the doors and windows are breaking down, upholstery is also on the way out. Has 145k on the clock and dont want it turning into a money pit. Also needs a new lambda sensor.

Wasn't trying to derail the thread or anything - first time on the motors forum and saw a thread that was pertinent to the issue I'm having - I figured there was no point creating another thread for the exact same issue I'm having - if you want I will however

No problem, typically each person creates their own "I want a car" thread as otherwise its impossible to remember what each persons requirements are and you just get a mish-mash of answers...
