i had the liftback model 99' for my first two years driving, I had a great relationship with her, never caused any problem and held on to its value well (be different now) but quality first car for reliability and the one on done deal looks well

    heres specs to that model

It looks modified. I'll stay away from it.
Insurance people don't like modified cars. Especially if its your first car...

My wife has a 97 Corolla for the last 5 years. Has never failed to start. Gone from 34K to 105k. Other than routine servicing has had a clutch early on (heavy pressure plate) and a pair of front struts and a couple of sets of tyres.

I'd be a bit put off by the mods, could have been driven hard, but then again I'm not 20. Boringly reliable is how I would describe it.

    And overpriced

€2500 for a 12 year old Corolla is madness. Looks like someone is looking for their money back on all that stuff they bought at Halfords.

You will have to tell the insurance people about the body kit, the alloys and the exhaust and what more mods it might have. The car would go down as modified and the insurance for it for a first timer would be astronomical.

And if you don't tell the insurance people about it, then you just have a piece of paper as if there's ever a crash, the insurance people will not like it a bit to find all those mods on the car...

I had that model without the mods and it was a 99 and I never had a problem with it. In fact I think I will be the car that I most enjoyed owning when I look back in 30 years.

It had a quality feel but also was so light and easy to drive.

Perfect for a first car. Takes abuse easy to drive light on petrol.

Don't expect sporty responses and handling.

It's no fun motoring, its plain a to b.

I had the 01 saloon as my first car. No trouble they do tend to drink oil a bit just keep a good eye on that.

Other then that standard maintenance will see you through!

Looks like an English import too. Irish Corollas didnt get electrics on the base models until 1999. Just might be worth doing a history check on the UK reg

€2500 for a 98 Corolla, has the world gone mad. It's worth about €900 max, and that's if it wasn't modified.

Crazy Price for a 98 Corolla, for that money you should be looking at models from 01/02.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

    Way too expensive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

3dr Corollas fetch more money than their 4/5dr versions because they are rarer and popular for modifying. Even an offer of €1800 is crazy money for a 12 year old one.

Also the pre 2000 facelifted models don't have VVTi engines so don't use as much oil. They are a light car and still quit nippy.

I'm not repeating everything everyone told you in the last thread.

Even at 2200 it's too expensive

EDIT: This guy had a similar question and got told exactly what he needed to hear. I wonder did he fail to listen though?

17's on a standard 3 door hatch like that with no suspension mods will drive like complete and utter ****. I've been there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

If youre going to make an offer then offer no more than a third the asking price at most.

I wouldnt recommend making an offer tho; even without seeing it Id lay money that car has been driven to death and is in bits.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,096 ✭✭✭johnos1984

OP you would be far better off to buy a newer model of the same car which hasn't been modified.

You can then do whatever needs to be done to it yourself and be happy in the knowledge that it hasn't been wrecked beforehand.

Does it have to be a three door model? I have a saloon one, although boring, there is lots of life in it and lots of space.

Mine will be for sale in the coming weeks, I'm waiting on a car to come that I want to buy but if your not in a rush you can PM me for more info.

It has the usual Corolla faults but it's honest and feels good for its age/mileage.

Just trying to give you a better option than the one posted above.

If you don't have back problems now, you will after a few months driving on those wheels.

    Thanks.
