What do people do? Can foam rolling be used instead or should it be used along with stretching?

I try to do both. Not sure which order is best or even if you should do both. I generally roll first and then stretch after. Then again I don't do either nearly as often as I should - especially rolling.

muscles are arranged like bags of drinking straws. If you get little knots i individual fibres ( trigger points) you need to work locally on these. NO amount of general stretching will make any difference. This is why many people dont benefit or feel any different with stretching.
Rolling can be effective for working out these trigger points and then stretching should be easier. You most likely need even more localised massage with a ball, tool or hands to get rid of them altogether.
