Church Gate Collections

How do people feel about 'Political' and 'Sporting' organisations' having church gate collections?
Personally it drives me crazy considering the amount of money these organisations have and squander.
Surely church gate collections should be charity based only.
I approached our local church about a church gate collection for a good charitable cause only to be told 'booked out' for the year. No doubt every year by these non-charity organisations

Don't go to church so couldn't give a flying fook to be honest! :D

Once they're community focussed then I don't see what the problem is. Political ones seem a bit dodgy but nobody is forcing you to give money to them.. or go to mass for that matter =p

How does this work? Collect a load of church gates and sell them for charity?

Well a fool and his money are soon parted, I guess these non-charity folks figured that the biggest gathering of fools would be at a church. Shrewd move that, gotta make dollahs somewhere.

I have never understood this, certain parties have a tradition of collecting outside Churches nationally on a given date. I think it's highly inappropriate, out of all the places and methods of collectiong donations which are available. As a note, Sinn Fein and Labour don't do Church gate collections largely for this reason.

As for Charities, unless it's a religious charity which is directly related to the Church then its justifiable, but otherwise I don't think they should be bothering the faithful either.

It seems, as has been said, that there's a school of thought that Churchgoers must be either (a) stupider or (b) more generous than, say, Post Office goers, or shoppers.

It's the same as collecting outside any other business premises.

Doesnt make a difference just because theres a cross over the door.

Church gate collections should be purely restricted to religious based charities, any other collections are purely taking advantage of a large group of people gathered in the same place.

A lot of the larger newsagents - Spar, Mace and the likes - around my area have collectors standing outside them every morning.

I'd go for Option A above.

They just do collections at churches because there's a big turn out in most places still.
I don't see the problem tbh.

Political parties are allowed just one Sunday a year I believe
On the scale of annoying charity collectors they are right at the bottom

It'll be members of the local cumann doing it so you probably already know them. They are your neighbours

Just walk past, no big deal.
Sure they probably already know if you support them or not

Any political, sporting, or other non-charities (e.g. coursing clubs:rolleyes:) should feck off and find some other methods of funding themselves. They're just taking the piss

A question about church collections and you put it in the most Godless forum on the whole site??

(And I include A&A in that)

Many sports organisations depend on church gate to actually fund them as there funding usually meets a shortfall. In order to collect outside a church you need a licence. When you go to the gards to apply for one they will actually advise you if the day is booked out or not.

I dont see how you can differenciate between giving to say SVP or the local GAA club both are worthy and in need of the money.

As for political parties... they can ask my asre

I wonder is the op slightly miffed because s/he did not manage to arrage the collection correctly...

Its a very odd post to be honest.

It's all the rage out where the hills have eyes. They even do collections for the gene-pool.

From being involved in a Sporting Organisation myself, i can tell you for a fact that it's virtually impossible for clubs to survive without some sort of fundraising. Running a lotto can be pretty profitable but alot of the time it just covers the losses.

Ironically, the one church gate collection we hold each year, we only collect it on behalf of the County Board.

Loads of churches in Galway City do them.
I'm probably going to get roped into doing one this year :(
Don't particulary want to,have better things to do with my time.

Next thing you know the Church will be handing around baskets in Church looking for money off us as well!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,230 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

I'd like to see the local TDs bagging groceries at Tesco. Bouncing frozen chickens off them would be great sport.

Charities, sure. Local sports, sure. Political parties, I'm not so keen on, but since it is usually locals doing them I find it hard to walk past for fear of seeming rude. But I do think that that should be the pecking order, with priority going to local outfits.

I've done it myself a good few times, for charities.

If politicians are earnest about separating church from state, they should collect their money elsewhere. It seems that a lot of politicians are happy to use the churches to collect money, but are not too pleased when the churches have an opinion on political issues.

To be honest i am more a beliver that politicians collect outside churches to raise there profile as good honest church goers than actually collecting...

Have you nothiced the boxes are sealed....This is so people cannot see the poor amount collected.

I don't attend myself churches but as I pass them and see political parties outside them, I consider it bad form to say the least.
