    Yo all,
Recently saw a van with a white reg on the front and a yellow reg on the back. Now, when I first saw it, I assumed "NI Reg", but then on the double-take, I saw that the reg format was "01 MH *****" (don't remember the numbers). Never saw this one before - is it even legal?

I've seen it on a good few cars. Mostly on Donegal reg cars who might spend a lot of time over the border, i'm guess its so they dont stand out as a southern car when in the north.
I'm not sure of the legalities though.........

Got one on a bike I brought down (years back), the Northern shop I bought it in put a plate on for me (was nice of them I thought).

I didn't like how it stood out so put a white one on later.

Irish regs on yellow plates are one of my pet hates. Anytime I see one my immediate thoughts are "scumbag" or "dangerous driver". I don't care who I offend with that and it's based on my own experience with these drivers. BTW it has little or nothing to do with being inconspicuous in NI, it's to make their reg more confusing and less likely to be reported correctly to the Gardai after they've driven dangerously, thrown rubbish out the window etc.

Overall I do not see the point of fitting anything except a legal plate... what does it prove?

They should just move up there altogether.

This was very common several years ago when "the troubles" were in full swing.
A lot of people in the border counties as well as sales reps etc. who made regular trips over the border would fit yellow plates in the hope that they would blend in with the locals.
In certain areas you were considered a legitimate target if your car had a southern reg.
There doesn't seem to be as many yellow reg southern vehicles nowadays, apart from the "Howya Boss" Transit-driving "tarmacadam contractors" (and the Donegal Rally fraternity).

Given how awful reg plates look I get why people put some custom ones on their cars (such as the German style plates on German cars which I think actually looks pretty good), but yellow plates are just about as hideous as the regular Irish plates, so I really dont see the point.

    Cartell.ie says 01MH10226 doesn't exist in it's database.

I'm thinking it's a custom reg plate that someone got registered up north. As they're working down here, it makes sense, as anyone looking at the front will see what looks like a legit Irish reg. Only spotted them as they park arseways on a bend next to a house that is being worked on, which I have to drive around most days.

Report it to the Gardai. 01 MH 10226 is not a UK registration, "personalised" or otherwise. And if it doesn't appear on the cartell database then it probably isn't a valid Irish reg either. The car could be stolen, ringed etc.

Parking arseway on a bend with an illegal plate and possibly an invalid reg - how surprising. As I said ealier - dangerous drivers and scumbags.

So from the reg plate of the car you have deducted that the driver is a dangerous driver and a scumbag.

Bravo sir, Sherlock Holmes ain't got sh1t on you!

Will be doing it Sunday, once I confirm the house number that it usually parks outside of.
