It makes me think, there must be something to the posting - interesting and detailed maybe.
More often than not, I'd read a post that someone else had said was "tl;dr"

I like to be educated - and if not that, at least informed as to how others are thinking so I can get a better understanding of where they are coming from.

It helps shape further compromises down the line I found in the past.

80% of what you need is contained in 20% of where you are looking for it. So a bit of editing on behalf of the OP would be well received much of the time. If I find that an article is making me lose interest halfway through, I might post that it was too long and I didn't read it - not for kudos though, just because it really didn't get the OP's point across to me.

If others want to read it all - that's fine by me. Don't really see an issue to be honest.

If you have no interest and dont want to read it then dont post it up nobody cares if your not interested just click out of it and find another thread that interests you

    TLDR should be banned

As a response to post, it's trying to be cool. Which is rarely ever cool.

As an addendum to your own post, shortening a longer point for those in a hurry, it's useful.

    tl;dr -- response = bad, addendum = good.

too long is a reflection on the reader, not the author.
In need of paragraphs, I understand. But, tl;dr does not indicate this.

If I post something substantial and long, I mention "Long article" in the title or first post headline.

Those that come along later and tell me a post is too long to read, well that confuses me.
After all they took the time to at least glance over it, to get the gist of it, they then took the time to post that they were too tired and its too long!
    Go figure! LOL

Rubbish I'm afraid - If one chooses to type 60 pages to explain how (s)he felt seeing two winos kissing and posts it on a public chat forum then it is perfectly the right of all who open the thread to have their say on the post in question as long as they stick to the charter.

By starting a thread you are inviting comment on its content - don't tale offecnce if some tell you that you're waffling.

Time is a relative concept. If the reader of the piece spends a certain lenngth of time which they deem appropriate and have not elicited anthing they deem useful or to the point then it should be up to them to call this out.

It comes down to your target audience - if you want to write a 3,000 constitutional law book then do so knowing your target audience will have the interest to read it and to make time to do so.

If you are on an internet chat forum then be aware that many people will be doing other things at the same time and may not have 10 minutes to read a long article.

So they will have read some of it to determine whether the post was going somewhere?
Why would someone waste their 'oh so precious' time posting it if they haven't the time/attention span to read the post?

Well my opinion on it is like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Just because you have the right to do something, doesn't mean you should do it.

The problem is not in thinking that something is too long. It's not in that you didn't read it. The problem is that you think it's necessary for you to say so. The author of the post in question is not going to do anything in response to "tl;dr". It's just a waste of space and, on a forum like this, that makes you a waste of space.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

A lot of the cases where it seems to be used are in response to generic copypasta "hey look at this hilarious joke/news item/amazing information I found on the internetz". When it's used as a reply to this at least it is less annoying than the phrase "old joke is old".

I agree that it can sometime be quite mean to post it when someone is genuinely looking for feedback/replies.

unless the wall of text is extremely stupid, stating 'tl;dr' is effectively backpeddling out of responding to something if it's aimed at you or it's a really bad shot at humour on your part.

Some people think it's funny, when it quite obviously isn't. There should be some sort of automatic ban in place for any poster that responds to a thread with it.

And if you think you are funny with a Mary Harney joke or dew took our jewbs then think again.

I usually don't "TL;DR" unless the OP doesn't understand paragraphs or common grammar. Mainly then even I'm too busy or lazy to try to decipher the cryptic block of text in front of me.

Some people just do it on any long post - even well written ones (eg. the hangover cure thread) and that's just fecking annoying.
