Dole could be brought to UK levels if Irish Bankruptcy laws were same as UK.

If Irish bankruptcy laws were closer to UK laws, then maybe the dole payments of both countries could be closer too. (with a cost of living factor built in).

    http://www.thriftypages.ie/2008/12/going-bankrupt-in-ireland.html

A UK unemployed person can go bankrupt and basically jettison all of their debt, and after a year the bankruptcy conditions elapse.

The bankruptcy laws there are much less draconian than here, and bankruptcy would be a necessity if on the dole long term on such a meagre amount of benefit. Bankruptcy would leave them in a situation where the UK dole rate would be enough to survive on.

However, UK dole crossed with Irish bankruptcy laws is more or less a no win situation as people on the dole have debt which is far too punitive (more punitive conditions apply for up to 11 years longer) to voluntarily walk away from, but would have to be walked away from if dole levels were matched to UK levels.

Would those advocating massive social welfare cuts agree with changing Irish bankruptcy laws?
