During my undergrad i did do some project work that involved interviewing people and also researcher skills...how do i go about asking lecturers for references? would a written letter be better than a email? should i call or would that be too direct?

Depends what the person who is asking for the reference wants. Would they be happy with an email from your lecturer?

Might be better to get a reference written up and signed by them and have it for again. Call the lecturer if they're back or email them.
