TAYLOR FOCUSING ON TENTH BODOG.COM WORLD GRAND PRIX TITLE
PHIL TAYLOR set his sights on a tenth Bodog.com World Grand Prix title next month as the event was launched at a packed Dublin Press conference today.
The world number one will defend his title in the double-start tournament at the Citywest Hotel from October 4-10, with the tournament being shown live on Sky Sports HD.
Having won 15 World Championships and 11 World Matchplay titles, another World Grand Prix win would see him reach double figures in victories in a third major tournament - a feat unrivalled in the sport's history.
"I try not to think too much about records but to win a tenth World Grand Prix would be very special," said Taylor, who turned 50 last month.
"I've had a lot of success in the tournament, as well as some bad memories with three first round defeats!
"The double-start format is a great challenge and you have to be on your game all the time because the format's short early on and if I'm honest I'm always nervous going into the first round."
Taylor will find out his first round opponent when the draw takes place next Tuesday, with the final two qualifying events taking place in Holland this weekend.
The world's top 16 qualify by right, and are joined by the leading four Irish or Northern Irish players and 12 other qualifiers for the £350,000 tournament.
Taylor, though, is leaving no stone unturned in his bid for the £100,000 first prize, which would see him win a third successive title.
"I've changed my lifestyle this year and it's paying off for me now," said Taylor, who has lost over three stones in weight this year and recently employed a nutritionist and fitness trainer.
"I've just turned 50 and I know that it's more important than ever for me to take my preparation seriously, but I'm loving it at the moment.
"I'm probably playing the best darts of my career, but that's the result of 25 years of experimenting and trying new things. I've changed a lot and it's all coming together."
Taylor has been made the 4/9 favourite for the Bodog.com World Grand Prix, with Australian Simon Whitlock the 9/1 second favourite and Raymond van Barneveld - the runner-up in the last two years - alongside 2007 champion James Wade at 10/1.
Young Irishman William O'Connor is expected to make his World Grand Prix debut in the event, and has been made a 200/1 outsider with Bodog.com - although Taylor is tipping the Cappamore newcomer to impress.
"I've seem William a few times this year and he looks like an exciting prospect," said Taylor. "He played in UK Open a few months ago and did well on stage, so that won't faze him in Dublin and he'll have the support of the crowd.
"He's getting plenty of experience in the Players Championship events and he won't be scared of anyone on stage - I hope I don't draw him!"
The Bodog.com World Grand Prix will be played from October 4-10 at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin, and screened live on Sky Sports HD.
Tickets for the Bodog.com World Grand Prix cost from €20 (plus booking fee) and can be purchased from www.ticketgroup.ie or via 00353 (0) 818 33 33 44.

Every tv event interview iv seen with him over the past 10 to 12 yrs has mentioned in some way a new fitness regime... Im sorry, but what a pile of poo as per usual coming from him.

No doubt he is the best player ever to chuck a dart,we wont ever see his likes again im guess, and as darts fans we are priveleged, but the bloke has had more diet ideas than unislim.

Give me the truth any day, bout players having there 5 or 6 pints and a few doubles vodkas before events, rather than horse sh i te sandwiches with lettuce.........

So much for the luck of the Irish. Bates no walk over either. All could not have got harder first round draws.

All the Irish lads are well travelled, and the short format of the 1st round games are in there favour..... WHo wud have thought adrian gray wud have beat taylor a few yrs back???

I wud be happy if i was either of the 3 that drew that 1,2 and 3 seeds here, cause there is now no pressure on them, cause very few expect them to win.

Is it still best of 3 sets in the 1st round? If that's still the case it's a chance for any of the lower ranked players to catch out the top seeds. All the best to the Irish players.

Jesus to have 4 lads entered in any sport and 3 of them to draw the worlds 1, 2 and 3 must be the worst luck ever.
At least it gives them something to aim and practise for now. Wade can be up and down these days and I think if Willie hit his doubles in the UK in Bolton he might have beaten him. Now its Mick's turn and he is on his home turf again and will not be a bit nervous. These days which Barney turns up is anybodies guess and John's done it all before and won't be worried in the slightest and will smile all the way. Brendan played very well against Taylor at same venue last year and is firing on all cylinders at the moment and has sent many of the top players for an early shower in the past 12 months. If he reproduces last weekends form especially the win over Hamilton and gets away quickly then he could indeed in the short format of the first round give Taylor a very tough night.
Then theres Willie. Willie can beat just about anybody on his day. In the PDC players Champs he has taken plenty of scalps and having been with him in Bolton he was in no way phased at all by being on TV the first night. He took to the stage like an otter to a stream and I think will beat Bates in Dublin. Barry is back close to his best but I know that knowing his opponent will have Willie already hammering the board down in Cappa and anything like the form he showed in hammering Whitlock last Saturday might be jus about enough. I wish them all the very best and hope to get up for a couple of nights.
    :):)
    PS
Does anybody know if the draw as written out above stands for the tournament ... ie are winners playing the man next to them :confused:

C'mon, Pops, go back to my previous post and read it slowly - - the draw and schedule of play are self-explanatory !

    Round {1} - best of 3 sets
    Round {2} - best of 5 sets
    Q/finals - best of 7 sets
    S/finals - best of 9 sets
Final - best of 11 sets

Sets are the best of 5 legs 501 double start.

Might throw a fiver on William O'Connor e/w. 300/1 outroght on PP, EW odds are 150/1.

Probably won't happen, but sure why not.

Got my tickets for the friday night and they are in Tiered Seating!!. Not impressed as i booked them direct in july and paid the same price as a table..apparently the citywest have no control but to be sitting in a row of people having to move them every time i need to get a beer or have a pee is ridiculous. Talking to the randomers at your table is half the fun and why this has been changed is beyond me.

AFAIK you can't, but you can register for 125 a day and when/if you get knocked out you can stay and watch. Now if it was 50 or less into both i'd pay it, but it seems they were wide to this behaviour, and set it at 125 a day.

Fairplay to The Irish Daily Sun today who have a pullout in the sports section for this comp. Interview with Taylor. The Irish lads get a mention and also a drawa card for all the rounds. Most papers dont even mentioin darts let alone a pullout

As much as i like darts ill never go again to the citiwest after the bar debacle a couple of years ago. The management there suck and its perculated down to their staff dont care either.

What are the chances someone(or terry Jenkins again) forgetting its a double in/out tournament this year?

Was it last year(or year before) Jenks forgot twice during the same match?

think be more appropriate to ask IF will ever step up to win a major. I think its very very doubtful, not while Taylors about anyway.

Really tough first match, but put a little bet on Wayne Jones winning tournament(without Taylor) on betfair and someone matched the bet at 70/1  Really tough 1st game against Merv King tonight, but Jones is quite a solid player and is getting better on the stage. Well worth it at 70/1 I reckon

Anderson has class but I'm expecting a Baxter win here.

    COME ON DOLAN.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,325 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

Taylor just too goid for Dolan. Dolan did't do himself justice though as he struggled to get going in some of the legs.

Taylor is just too good though. I can't see past him winning the tournament.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭sc86

delighted to see anderson win, normally he would have gave in
1 set down and 2-0 down in that set and he wins 2-1
    best game of the night

sick of hearing bout adrian lewis, waiste of talent

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,480 ✭✭✭Devastator

Great performance by Wayne Jones tonight! Back and forth against King, both playing well by Jones took his chances when King missed few doubles. Don't think anyone would give 70/1 on Jones now after that :D Up against Steve Brown next.

Anyone confirm if I'm right in thinking that Jones is on opposite side of drawm to Taylor?

Hate the way PDC just give draw to QF's, wish they would put QF1 or something beside each game then in semi final section say QF1 V QF2 or something similar.
