5th Gear Problems with 1998 VW Polo

    Hi guys,

    I'm really hoping someone can give me some advice before I go to a garage and get ripped off!

    I brought a 98 VW Polo in July and it had just passed it NCT.

    Not long after buying it, I noticed it was hard to get the car into 5th gear, the problem that it just wouldn't 'slide' into place. I thought it was the way I was driving the car (!) and ignored it, but now it just won't go into 5th gear without me literally whacking the gear stick into place!! I have a long motorway drive to and from work every day, and it's a bit dangerous as I kind of get stuck in Neutral, wrestling around and trying to drive at the same time...I'm really hoping it's a small problem that can easily be fixed as I really cann't afford to be paying for a new gearbox or anything.
    All other gears are fine and also I have tried going through the gears whilst stationary and it goes into 5th gear no problem then.

    Any ideas guys?? :confused::confused::confused:
