Well done to the UK Union leaders...could anything similar be done here?

Just watching Sky News here, and many of the Unions in the UK are coming together and issuing the government with industrial action over the government cuts in Britain. I say well done to them, and I hope they can make a difference.

I wonder could anything like that be co-ordinated in this country?

What, like make the economic downturn even worse than it already is?

If the unions are losing income, perhaps they can excavate some of the sand they've their heads buried in and sell it.

The only people in Ireland with the apetite for a strike are the Public Service workers who are already getting the Lion's share of the tax revenue. And their last attempt at industrial action showed their organisation skills are as good as their work standards....Sadly, private sector workers and self employed have to continue working through this crisis...

How could this intervention make the economic down turn even worse than it is? If the unions issue industrial action to get the english government to listen to the people, and unite together against the government cut backs, surely it is better than doing nothing?

I respect your view, and I will say I am no expert on matters like this, but if this action would cause a further economic downturn, how would it? I am interested in your view

I agree with you. Private sector workers and the self employed are absolutely screwed in the current climate

Because the British Government doesn't have any money to give to these people. Where do you think they'll get the money from?

Listening to the people is fine, but when it comes to economics the people often shout for 2+2=5 type untenable economics. The Government, on the other hand, is forced to live in the real world, where expenditure must balance income.

So, without cuts, how exactly do you propose the government fill the massive black hole in budget?

Would you be fine with a tax rise to say 60%?

Or would you rather just pretend it is not happening and carry on as it was before, borrowing money it can't afford to pay back, hoping it will all be fine in the morning?
