    Hello,

i have purchased a 48gb Express card SSD and was hoping to copy what this guy has done http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/forums/viewthread/76644/
by having the SSD in my 2008 MBP as a drive just to boot into OSX and keep my data on internal drive.

I have also ordered an upgrade 500Gb drive for the MBP. My initial plan was to clone my current drive onto the 500GB prior to installing it. But this guy recommends putting a 50gg partition for system files which can then be used to make a clone on the express card, if you follow me? This way if the express card ever fails i still have a working laptop.

The question is, when it comes to cloning my current HDD onto the 500 gb drive, is it possible to then create the 50gig partition? What other options would i have?

if you are running 10.5 or higher you can repartition your drive at any time using disk utility. you could always partition the drive from the start and then clone.

Thanks for that, I am running 10.6, sorry i should have said. Ok so assuming i partition the new drive, how do i go about installing system files on one partition from my current drive?

first need to move your home folder to a separate partition

    follow this guide

    http://www.macgurus.com/productpages/guides/MoveUsers_part1.php

then you just have apps and system on the drive. and should be ready for cloning.
