my sons laptop won't connect to the internet anymore, it flashes up but dissappears, all the signs are that internet explorer is infected and I should uninstall it and reinstall it. But how will I re-install it if I have no internet connection. i tried to reset the advanced section of internet connections, and start it up in safe mode but it didn't make any difference. he has avg on it but it picked up nothing. If I can reinstall internet explorer should i also follow the steps above in 'please try before posting' for malware or will it be gone, thanks, f.

Can you go to system restore and restore to a previous restore date ?

Use another computer to download it onto a memory key or cd.

Depending on your O/S(XP, Vista, Win7), you should be able to reinstall internet explorer through "Add/Remove Programs" in your control panel.
I think its in "Add/remove windows components" in windows XP, not so sure for the other OS's

pixbyjohn, there are no restore dates on it? but thanks.
I will just try removing it now in add/remove programes and see what happens, thanks for the replies, f.

ETA I just tried that removing and adding the internet explorer programme, no joy, so if anyone has any other suggestions they would be welcome, thanks, f

Try downloading Firefox and see if you have the same problem.

Boot up into Safe Mode with Networking. Delte anything that is stored in the Startup folder. Run msconfig and disable all startup items then go to download.com and download Malwarebytes Anti Malware and run it. I had to do the same yesterday to a client machine to get it back after rogue antivirus hijacked the PC.

thanks for the ideas i tried a combination of them, managed to download the anti-malware and it ran and picked up 5 things (not sure if these were from the avg vault lol) , still no joy with the internet but by then the network drivers were all missing anyway. Hence when i uploaded a portable version of firefox it wouldn't connect either. I might try and get spybot onto it later, his click and drag is gone as well. i tried a few of .dll fixes you put in to the system registry and some of his icons came back, so hopefully ww will get there eventually, thanks again, f.

Hello Freida, what do you mean? Are you saying that the computer now isn't recognising the network adapter(s)?

yea, I uninstalled them and restarted to let the computer find them itself, they are there now but have no properties. I will have to have a good poke around it at the weekend - oh joy! thanks, f

Try Downloading and installing Internet explorer 8, instead of using the add remove windows components.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.aspx

Make sure that you dont get IE9 beta by mistake it kept redirecting me.

What OS is on the machine and do you have any messages in the event viewer.
If you do copy and paste the full message here.

Access the event viewer by going to start -> Control Panel -> (Performance and Maintenance ->) Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer.

Depending on your setup and windows version.
