Upload everything to Google docs. That's what I do :)

Integrate the date into the filename....eg magnumopus_20100912.doc

No, I only bother saving to Google docs unless I'm working somewhere without an internet connection - and even then I'll upload straight away once I get online again.

Google Docs has so many benefits. The big three, for me would be: 1) Its available wherever you have internet connectivity - so you don't need to remember to bring a USB stick everywhere you might write. 2) Your work is stored on Google servers, which are built so that if that if one fails, thousands of others are going to keep your work safe - so no documents lost because of corrupt files! 3) Google Docs automatically creates restore points for your work, so if you make massive changes to a chapter and decide it was a mistake - or inadvertantly save the file after deleting something you didn't mean to - then you can go back and get previous versions with no hassle whatsoever.

I mail myself the versions each day so I can work at home and at my job. I also keep a copy on a USB stick in case for some reason I don't have net access.

Google docs won't let me paste in Windows for some bizarre reason and it won't allow files over 1MB so I was never able to use it.
