I'm travelling to the US in a few days and will be renting a car over there.

I have only heard about this International Driving Permit and have not got one!

    Are these needed?

The international driving permit is "recommended" for a very simple reason: language barrier. Imagine you were French, with a French license. If a cop in the US stopped you, he might have a hard time figuring out what is what. The IDP is simply a booklet that contains translations of your license into a bunch of different languages to make it easier for authorities to read your license.

Now, since you presumably have an Irish license and are going to the US, there is no language barrier (or at least not much of one :). The IDP would not be much use anyway.
