I wrote about this in another fourm and i was surprised most people disagreed with me, i dont think people under the age of 21 should be able to get job seekers allowence, if a person of that age is not working they should be in school, college, youthreach or some other training program not on the dole, this has nothing to do with who caused the mess the country is in or the banks or nama, its just a very bad idea to be on the dole at such a young age no matter how good or bad the economy is.

I agree completely and have said this myself before, there is no reason why they shouldnt be in college or doing a FETAC course to educate themselves, I know people myself who have no other ambition in life than to just finsh school go on the dole and sit at home all day doing nothing

What if they are genuinely looking for work? What if they are not able to afford to go back to college or survive without the allowance? Not everyone who is unemployed under 21 can be provided for by parents/siblings etc.

Arguably this applies to everyone, not just those under 21.

What about a 25 year old who is just out of college but the skills they have learned are now redundant and they need to retrain? What about a 35 year old whose Jobseekers benefit has run out and they are on to the allowance. Why should they be in a more privileged position than someone under 21?

By all means, reduce or remove it for people under a certain age who are still being supported by their parents/grandparents or are otherwise supported. Equally, I accept the reality that unemployment benefits should be cut. But across the whole board rather than in a discriminatory manner.

I agree with Johnny... the suggestion that your age could prevent you from receiving this is bollocks tbh.

There are people aged 21 who have worked fulltime since they were 17-18 and have paid PAYE and PRSI. Are you telling me they should not be allowed to claim dole while they look for another job?

How bout - and this may seem a radical idea, until you consider it's the general guiding principal of most welfare states that work - we look at each individual's circumstances?

How bout we really have a sliding scale of benefits that takes in account what the person's circumstance is, and what they want to do, and what we (society) would like them to do (in the case of under 21's, further education towards our glorious smart economy.)

So, instead of blanket ideas and black and white lines, we give you benefits if you need them and we send you to school at the same time? Rather than how it is today, where you reach the magical age of 23, for example, and all of a sudden it is determined that, for that reason alone, you need and can claim dole and go to school at the same time?

I agree with the principal of pushing kids to stay in education up to a certain age. I disagree with blunt and unintelligent approaches to handing out welfare.
