Speaking through a translator yesterday afternoon, Imam Halawa said he was “very grateful to Allah” that the burning was called off. “Otherwise it would create violence with Muslims everywhere,” he said.

Isn't that, umm, odd? Does he speak any English or just very poorly?

I've never spoken to the Imam so personally I don't know him...

I don't know if I ever herd him speak english. Maybe he can speak a little.

There is the main Imam who does the prayer and Arabic sermon.
There is another Imam who gives the English translation of the sermon before the friday prayers.

I don't know either of their names so I'm not sure which Imam is the one you quoted though it cannot be the one who gives the English sermon because, well, he can speak english!

    Sorry for being unhelpful... :)
