Can anyone make an educated guess as to how much money would be saved - worldwide - if no nation had a military service?

Loads a money is the answer. You'll find some figures on here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures

I was surprised to see Irish Defence Forces spending is 1.5Bn Euro for 2009:eek:

That's quite astonishing in itself (the figures on that page, I mean). However, how much more is spent that is'nt disclosed or measured; and think of the other - positive - things that money could be spent on. I firmly believe that the majority of world leaders and their 'ministers' are ignorant and - for want of better words - stupid and self-righteous.

Be careful using figures like that, firstly that is US $ - the figure is actually €1,032

Further to this misunderstanding, I doubt if that takes into account the income the DF would have (Escorts etc on a small scale, Sale of Barracks on a larger scale. Anyway - if you want a breakdown of expenditure you need look no further than the department of defense: http://www.budget.gov.ie/Budgets/2010/Documents/Estimates%20Book%202010.pdf

Only another 195 more budgets to work out the worldwide spend :)

Sure some anti war group has done a guess of how much is spent on defence but as some countries include there police forces and other services among that.......

Easy. None. The governments would just find something else to spend it on instead.

The concept of a world without defence expenditure is about as unlikely as the concept of getting a reduction in your tax bill if the government suddenly had no defence expenditures.

The question you should be asking is how much we would save if unpaid conscription was brought in?

So you believe in the concept of defence yourself.

defence spending is a nescessary evil just like installing a lock.

Thanks Cliste, of course $USD, sorry. It works out to Euro1,227,990. Either way it's still a lot of lolly.
I doubt that money escorting earns much for the DF in the greater scheme of things. How many barracks that were closed are still owned by the state requiring 24-hour security. Barrack closures in themsleves didn't generate much for the DF afaik. You can only sell a barracks once. The sale and merging of barracks will of course generate it's own economies in time.

How much will it cost to fundamentally change the nature of humanity to the point that we don't commit violence on each other?

Figure that bit out first, then look at what is spent on military matters.

No offense now, but stop with the figures - this was 2009 figures - at least convert it using 2009 exchange rates - or even easier take the number I gave, if you use the reference link at the bottom of the wiki article you'll find that it was €1,032,000 - and in fairness we would have spent it using €!

I can't think of a country that had unpaid conscription.
