well i got some new g&g bb's today, i usually stick with .2's but they were all out so i said id try .25's.

im currently shooting around 320-323 fps range with .20g's, what should i expect my fps to drop down to with .25's? like a 20fps drop or a 50 fps drop?

not that much really, 5-10 perhaps. And frankly, your performance will improve, loss of range is minimal due to increased kinetic energy of the round, and your accuracy will increase due to less wind effect on the bb.

I use only .25s and most of my guns are 320 or around there... i outperform .20 users.

I have to agree with firekitten. I only use .25 in most of my aeg's i use them because of less wind effect and better accuracy/grouping. But with my L96 i use .28s

cheers for that advice after tomorow i may stick to using .25's forever more. will report back tomorow evening.

And there I was thinking that 1j with a 0.25g bb was about 290fps. Ya live and learn every day...

    1J = 294fps with a .25g BB.

    Is it not 293FPS

    Pedantic Pat hat on!

regardless, operational difference is minimal if not better. Take that from experience, not theory ;)

Well I got 294fps from an fps calculator. http://www.arniesairsoft.co.uk/?filnavn=/articles/fps_limits/fps_calc.htm

I assume its accurate but yeah I'm not arsed getting out my chrono and upgrading a gun to fire exactly 1J :D.

Oh I didnt say (or mean to imply) otherwise, was just merely posting to clear things up.

    Haha my calculator says 293!!

But anyway, if the above posters are firing 320ish with .2 and only loosing say 10fps with .25 its still over 1J?

It can't be over the 1 joule. If it's firing at 320fps with .2, then it's legal. You chrono your Airsoft guns with .2's, so if it's energy output is <328fps (i.e. 1j) then you're gravy.

Oh im not arguing about it, i just find it confusing!

Dread: didn't mean to insinuate you were hon, sorry.

Confusion clear up time.... '5-10fps loss' = guesstimate. If 294 be it, then so be it.

If your gun shoots 328 with a .2, it will be under 1j with any other round, regardless of weight.

The overall point however I tried to get across to the op, is that yes, while your fps does drop, do not let the 'zomg i need dat one more fps to be l33t and shoot really far!' syndrome take hold. .25's actually improve accuracy and range loss, if even present is negligible.

Refer to KDouglas's bb experiment.... in a gbb the bb speeds up out of the barrel, bizarre but tested. the kinetics of bbs aren't fully understood, so the rationale of 'its heavier, it won't go as far' isn't as correct as one might think.

Myself and other players use naught but .25s now for the performance improvement. The op was unsure of the performance using .25s, and myself and others have said that this is not the problem they imagined, in fact, it makes things better.
If we lay things out into their most simple, even if there is a 5m range loss at 50, with .25s over .2s, the increased stability and resistance to wind deviation of the .25 mean you're more likely to hit the target that 5m more wouldn't have helped with.

However, its often reported the difference isnt even that great, except in the performance benefits of the .25 round. Try them out, and make up your own mind.

This place afterall is only a forum, and we're only repeating our own experience and that of others. Best way to see? try, and make up your own mind.

cheers for the replies, after trying them i like the accuracy of the .25 better and the fps drop isnt noticeable. i would rather the better accuracy.

    cheers guys

ive found the excel .23's very good as well if you can find them

I use .2's indoor and .25's outdoor. Honest reason being, .25's tend to drop straight down as they reach the end of my AEG's range, where .2s would (due to wind) start to curl in said winds direction. Honest reason for using .2's indoors, I'm not an overkilling nut case so even though it's .05 of a difference I still like to minimise the pain factor for my target. Been hit by .28's at close range and could feel the difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,205 ✭✭✭Firekitten

there is next to zero pain difference between them... Both the 0.2 and 0.25 are moving with 1j of kinetic energy... unless the .28 firing gun was hot, so was it.

Less than a gram's difference in weight would have next to no discernible difference in impact.

the best thing about them i noticed is they stayed in a straight line mostly unless a huge wind came along. i didnt notice them dropping off myself but i didnt keep my head out to long to see that.

I can only speak from personal experience here and I prefer the 0.25's, as has been said, minimal loss in distance, versus better accuracy at range

alot of regular players up at oakridge are switching over to 0.25's as they have told me they notice that for distance shots especially in wind that they're better

I've heard that its bad to use heavier BBs in pistols. I know pistols aren't going to be as accurate anyway, but considering a lot of you use heavier BBs, do ye have any horror stories of using them in pistols?

Who told you it was bad to use heavier BBs in pistols?

A friend said thats what he was told. But it doesn't make sense to me, so I thought I'd ask.

I read on the internet that dogs cant look up, because a guy that read it on an internet forum, wrote it to look like he knew what he was saying, and another guy believed him, so when asked, told HIS mate, dogs cant look up too... Vicious cycle.

Whoever said its bad, is incorrect. I know pistol users running up to .43s with no issues whatsoever. I cannot think of a feasible way heavier ammo could cause even minor problems, never mind 'nightmares'. Airsoft Rumor mill at it again :)
