    Hi Guys,

Just wondering if its possible to change my business name for say... 24 hours, register a .ie and then change it back?

I need to register a .ie, but dont want to register a corresponding business name, I have a business name which also has a .ie registered to it currently, so my thinking was I could change that business name, register the .ie I need and then change it back to the way it was.

Would this be possible and would this have any implications for my current .ie address?

    Thanks!

    You don't need to

If you're a sole trader then you'd be registering the domain as:
    Sole Trader
    Discretionary Name

So you'd provide the registrar you are using with a signed letter explaining why you want to register the domain and how it is connected to your business

For example, if your business name is say "Irish Widgets" and you wanted to register "plates.ie" (random, silly example) the registry wouldn't see the link, so you'd need to explain it

    Thanks Michelle,

But what if my business name was Tralee Mechanic and I wanted to register something like kerrybusinesses.ie

Would that get approved, even seeing as its not exactly related?

You can try - as long as the explanation is reasonable they'll allow most things
Just make sure that the explanation is an actual explanation and not a simple "cos I want it" (we get a LOT of those - and they ALL get rejected)

    Regards

That is how Boards got the Boards.ie domain back in the mists of internet history.

Yes, but the rules have changed quite a lot since then

Just pay the 20 squid and register the business name (you don't have to use it for anything nor do you have to register an actual business). That's what I had to do when I tried to register my first name and it wasn't allowed.
