A bookie in town has suspended betting on Billy Morgan taking us over. Mentioned on TV3 earlier too. Where did this come out of?!

Ye could do worse, his record speaks for itself.

I think one of his parents were from Galway if not both, open for correction on that though.

Think he be good for ye.

His team defeated Mayo in the 1989 final, what more could Galway fans want?

Could do a lot worse than Billy.

I thought Galway needed a no nonsense experienced manager. I thought they got that in Kernan but it didn't work out. They would certainly get that in Billy.

this would be a huge coup for galway after the embarrassment that was the big joe chapter

they need someone who can immediately command respect at county board level and in the dressing room
    billy will provide that

i would not rule out Micko just yet
word has been circulating that Micko and Dara O'Cineide are interested, with the latter taking over the reins within 12 months
sounds a little like uncle bobby (rip) and stan to me but lets see how this story develops

I very much doubt that Billy Morgan is in the frame. This sounds like a baseless rumour.

    i'm surprised of that tbh
galway could have given him one last shot at all-irl glory
it'll be another weak championship next year so a well prepared and driven team will emerge victorious

billy would be a sensational coup for the tribes
he'll really shake em up thats for sure

What a load of rubbish! Where did you hear the O'Cinneide rumour?!

As for Billy Morgan commanding respect, surely the same was said of Kernan.

For me, the most important aspect is a manager and selector team that will shake up the panel and be able to bring in a few new players into a couple of positions. Ford, Sammon and Kernan have not been able to make a serious go of this panel, all with different styles of management and method. It'll be seriously disillusioning if the same underperforming players line out again next year. (Don't want to name individuals)

So when should we know the final decision?

I'd very much agree with you there. There needs to be a serious shakeup of the panel. The team needs to be rebuilt as too many from this group of players have failed dismally. There's a few you'd have to keep obviously, the likes of Meehan, Hanley and Bradshaw. But I think sweeping changes are in order and if the new man sticks with the same panel again he'll be only wasting his time.

Judging by the very poor standard of our county championship I don't think we have an abundance of good players in the county right now, but we certainly have enough to be pretty competitive if the right manager can get the best out of them. That's all you'd ask for, and it's something the previous three managers failed to do. Look what McGeeney has done with Kildare, and what James McCartan has done with a Down team that was nowhere 12 months ago. Galway have more or less as many good footballers as either of those teams if some shape could be put on them.

Has the championship been that bad this year? Have been out of the country for a while so haven't been able to go to any matches.
Have been reading the reports though and didn't see too many new names hogging the headlines.

I don't think we can afford wholesale changes to the panel but I think a serious freshening up of the backs and midfield is in order. Even though Nickey Joyce, Armstrong and co are injury prone and inconsistent and have never fulfilled their potential they're definitely worth persisting with as our midfield has been so poor the last couple of years.

The standard isn't great to be honest. Look at the teams that got to the semi finals. An ordinary Mountbellew team, a spirited but very limited Barna, and a Killererin team still relying heavily on the Joyces. Corofin are really the only good team in it. The same predictable names are the ones impressing.

I'd agree that wholeale changes mightn't be in order simply because we just don't have enough suitable alternatives. The talent isn't really there at the moment. But a general shakeup is needed for sure. Some of those 2007 minors should be ready for the stepup.
