So after the disaster that was the PSP Go! do you think Sony will be announcing a new PSP 2? Maybe competition to the upcoming 3DS? What features are you hoping for and do you think they will stick with downloadable content only? I've read the rumours about a Sony Ericcson Android device that will be focused on gaming this can't be it for the PSP family can it? Discuss.

They won't make it digital download only, they have commented themselves that digital only, while possibly viable in the future, is not the way to go now. I expect 3D to keep up with DS3D

There will be a psp 2 and hopefully they will include some of the shortcomings of the original. I don't think it will be 3D but it will be powerful! Maybe it will have motion sensing to tap into the whole appstore market (at least that's what i'd do!). They'll probably do ps2 re-releases in the same way that the psp plays ps1 re-releases.

Also, it needs dual analogue sticks for certain games (FPSs) to be viable. Personally i'm looking forward to the homebrew possibilities of such a powerful handheld device.

The most trustworthy rumours seem to be point to it being a Sony Eriksson mobilephone to take on the iphone.

Some Sony Vp or something along those lines has said they're not doing it this year, not much of the year left but anyway that was what was said.

    The rumour goes that ...

...they are working on it, as Retro says, the PSPhone. They have an outstanding issue with the nVidia graphics chip in that it's using way too much power than they said it would, therefore lessening the battery time.

When that's resolved, it will be released. No ETA.

And possibly running an Android variant but I'm not sure if this is it's sole OS or maybe just based on Android.

I REALLY Can't see Sony allowing an open OS to be used AND provide access to the PSN and gaming.

Tomorrow the'll be a announcement for the Playstation portable 2, that or the far more likely Phantasy Star Portable 2 (considering it released this week). There should be a rule about releasing a game with the same acronym as the console.

Well i don't think the PSP GO was marketed properly. I really do hope they make a PSP functional as a phone. may be a slide out form factor would be suitable as i would like them to keep the traditional buttons on the PSP.

I don't think I'd like it if they made that PSP phone thing and not a standalone PSP 2. That would remind me of the Nokia NGAGE which was a heap of shíte as a handheld and a phone. One or the other I say.

Sony are just riding bandwagons at this stage. When the wii comes out sony brand it as a gimmick, then when they realise its selling by the bucket they bring out their own motion sensor.

Now they see that the iphone is doing so well they try their own. It'll proobably be 3D, dual screeen, touch screen, accelerometer.....whatever else they can copy

Thanks for the heads up, its looking more and more likely that psp2 is on its way.We can only hope and pray that sony have listened and put A SECOND ANALOGUE STICK on it lol.
Seriously if psp2 doesnt have 2 analogue sticks i just might have to ring Mr Sony himself and give him a good old fashioned ear bashing!!!

Well if it doesn't have 2 analogue sticks then I'm not buying it.
They don't need any bullsh1t fancy crap just good battery and upgraded graphics.

Now it appears one studio has the next PSP, and the device is “a pretty powerful machine,” according to Netherrealm Studios’ Shaun Himmerick.

If this is accurate, that would mean the PSP2 is not only real, but it’s also far along in development. Many have speculated that consumers will get their hands on the next handheld device from Sony sometime in 2011.

Himmerick spoke with Industry Gamers about the possibility of Mortal Kombat reboot landing on the PSP or Nintendo’s 3DS.
    Himmerick wrote:
We’re not launching day one on all consoles like that. We are looking at them; we have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support. Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over.

He went on to say the PSP2 appears to be a powerful little device.

That’s right, if all of this is accurate, the studio has a PSP2 but not a 3DS.

    That seems bizaare.

There are rumours Sony's been preparing a PSP2 for ages though, that some Sony devs had kits a long time ago. But they've been holding off on announcing it, probably because it won't be ready to release until late 2011, and because they still have PSPs to sell. In Japan anyway, with a new Monster Hunter special PSP coming later this year.

My guess is they'll announce it early next year, by GDC in March. Ship it in time for the holidays. Hopefully that will include Europe.

Sony is reportedly giving more and more developers access to the successor to the soon to be six-year-old PSP, with dev kits in the hands of (or en route to) "numerous development studios."

Develop cites "multiple industry sources" who claim that the "PSP2" is gearing up for a "significant launch window line-up," with developer-only hardware in the hands of Sony's internal teams and third-party video game makers. A developer at Mortal Kombat studio NetherRealm recently claimed the Warner Bros.-owned studio had PSP2 hardware.

We've never lacked for unconfirmed information on Sony's next handheld games machine. According to some reports, it has touch controls on its posterior, while others point to a gaming device that also acts as a smart phone and e-reader.

Sony, for its part, is not yet talking openly about the successor to the PlayStation Portable. The original PSP has sold more than 62 million units across multiple configurations, according to Sony.
