    Hi All,

This might be a ridiculous question but I'm so confused! Is there a difference between rent relief and rent allowance?? I looked up rent relief and it looks like it is dealt with by the Revenue and the rent allowance by the Social Welfare? Basically myself and my partner are going to need some help with our rent and I'm not really sure where to start? I know my Landlord does accept this. I just find it difficult to understand the difference? I would really appreciate some help! Thanks! :)

It's the Rent Allowance you need if you're not working. Rent Relief is claimed when you're in work and are renting privately.

You need to contact the Community Welfare Office in the first instance. You'll also need to go on the Housing List with the local council in order to be assessed, and provide proof of the same for the CWO.

    Hope this helps!

rent relief is a tax allowance for people who pay tax. it's worth €400 a year. Not a lot, really.

rent allowance was paid to certain people affected by the de-control of rents (at least that's what google told me)

rent supplement is a payment for people on low incomes / welfare. It's often called rent allowance.

there are very few people on this anymore .I think it changed to rent supplement in the 1980's and there are just a few people still on it.its all done by cwo's now.
