A world record 24 hour hurling marathon is taking place tonight in Cork, beginning at 6pm in Mallow GAA complex. 46 clubs in two Cork divisions, Duhallow and Avondhu, have nominated a player each to take part, with two 15 a side teams and 8 subs. All the clubs have been doing their own fundraising in recent weeks, and it is hoped that it will raise over €50,000 for Mallow General Hospital.

This is ongoing at the moment, and it would be appreciated if people around the North Cork area drop in and give their support to the players, between now and 6pm Saturday. After 7 hours of play, the score was Avondhu 55-96, Duhallow 51-130. First couple of hours were played at a fierce pace, so its bound to take its toll later on.

9 refs in the 24 hours, they hand the score over after they finish their two/three hour shift

they are after getting some fresh/rested players in again this morning, so the intensity will probably rise again. They have set up a dressing room with mattress for the lads to sleep on, and a couple of masseurs to keep the players going.

There a couple of pictures up on the facebook site at the moment, at least the weather has become drier, there were some very heavy showers around last night!

Duhallow ended up winning. Dont know the final score. In total adding points and goals together they had over 1000 points while Avondhu had jus under 1000 points. Very tough on the lads who had to play 15/16/17 hours. I was lucky to only have to do a few.
