All Bran Diet

I've started the AB diet aprox 3 weeks ago. It is like the Special K challenge but instead use all bran.

I cover (just) the AB with boiling water and let it sit for a minute.
This brings out the sugar for flavour.
I then add cold water and stir to the required consistency (I prefer mine runny)

I then eat it with a cup of coffee plus two glasses of water.

I drink water all morning until lunch when I repeat the above.

Then I have a regular low calorie protein & carb dinner in the eve.

    I've lost 7lbs in 3 weeks...
    Any comments/suggestions????

Follow a proper balanced diet and exercise regularly.

This is just a gimmick, fad , rubbish diet you are following ... I would guess your calories are way to low if thats all your eating. Yeah, you are loosing weight but probably a lot of muscle as well as fat.

So 3 months from now you will be smaller but look the same , skinny fat.

Someone once compared All Bran to a brillo pad moving through your gut, and I think that's a pretty apt description :D I still eat it every day though :pac:

Like Gax said it's more than likely that it's the drop in calories that is causing you to lose weight as opposed to anything particularly magical about the cereal itself. All Bran is full of fibre, but it's also pretty high in sugar so that's something to watch out for. No doubt at this point you've discovered how... eh.. regular you've become while eating it - that's one of the reasons I eat it too, psyllium husk/ lots of green veg just don't work as well for me and I rely on this to keep me ticking over.

If you're eating cereal twice a day and only one pro & carb meal the chances are that you're losing out on good fats and adequate protein, and that won't serve you well in the long run.

Personally I'd say by all means have the All Bran at breakfast, but learn how to construct the rest of your daily meals (lunch, dinner and any snacks needed) so that they contain plenty of protein, fats and some carbs (or very little, depending on what your preference is).

Some good advice here thanks. Problem is I'm a v picky eater :( Nothing else that I eat for lunch fills me up and keeps me going all afternoon the way the AB does.

Like I find that while I am on this diet (faddy as it may be) I am not hungry which is what I like about it.

If you reduce the variety of things you'll eat you'll often lose weight. When you stop this diet (it's not a long term thing) it's likely you'll yoyo unless you're very careful. Lacking veg, good fats and protein your skin, hair, mood, insulin sensitivity, cardio-vascular system, hormones and general well being may suffer.

All bran is pretty nutritionless muck and is laden with sugar.

I'd also suggest that there are many things that will keep you full... you just haven't tried them or given them a chance.

As others have said, by all means have it in the morning. But perhaps switch to a chicken breast, some almonds/cheese and 300g of steamed broccoli (or something of along those lines!) instead for lunch.

I'd agree with the sugar comment.

    Nutritionless muck?? Really??

It's sugar, wheat (also bad) and a multi-vit tablet. A good portion of those micro-nutrients are not going to be absorbed in the absence of fruit/veg/meat etc.

Though I was pretty surprised by the amount of magnesium in it (in that link you gave), a feature that redeems it slightly! :)

'cept that none of that magnesium is absorbable because of all the phytic acid in it binds it and prevents that absorbtion.

I think your description of All Bran was extremely accurate ;)

    What's wrong with wheat??

Since when did fibre become such a baddie food? :(

Fibre in vegetables and fruits = good

Harsh grain fibre that contains anti-nutrients and reduces the half life of important vitamins squished into a highly processed cereal breakfast = not good

I think this diet would make me very depressed. Seems like a quick fix, which is inevitably doomed to failure. All the regulars here will tell you the only solution to your weight and health problems is to deal with the problems in your diet and lifestyle head on and not try to avoid the real issues (becoming overweight/obese due to bad choices and behaviour) by following fad diets like this. You need to look at how you got overweight in the first place (I'm assuming you are) and make real changes if you want sustainable long-term results. Kellogs are just trying to make money out of you, overweight/obese/body-conscious people are their target market, dont' be fooled by their gimmicks.

Cool. Yeah well I agree with you about Kelloggs targeting a market. Like Special K is marketed as a low cal product while cornflakes are even lower cal....! But this is something (the all bran diet) that I came up with myself. I needed more fibre in my diet tbh. (And not to be too graphic but things are much better in that respect!!!!)

I don't think I'd be classified as obese or anything?? My BMI is 22.5/23 but most preferably I would like it to be 21/21.5.

I don't find this diet depressing at all!!!!! I really look forward to it everyday (particularly for lunch - I told you, I'm real picky so I used to find it hard to find anything to eat at lunch...)

Anyway, will update in a week or so to let yall know how I am doing the diet/weight etc!

I'm sorry but this diet seems dangerous, your body is not getting what it needs. How long do you intend to keep it up?
