Attention bands who are looking for somewhere to sell their music in a proper shop

First and foremost, to the moderators: this is not an advertisement, just a heads up for unsigned bands who would like a place to display their music in a proper shop that's opening in October.

What's up? As many of you know, Road Records ceased their operations at the tail end of July. I always supported and respected the fact that they were willing to stock any local band's music regardless of the credentials or haircuts the artists had at the time. I know for a fact that this was something they did out of love, and their cut of the sale was only to cover the space it was taking on the shelf. This to me is very important in keeping Ireland's music scene vibrant and I am going to keep it going at the same address on Fade St. beginning in mid to late October. As I said earlier, I'm not going to judge you based on how many non-friends and family members were at your last gig, just provide you with an outlet to sell your music to people who are in to you and maybe introduce it to some new people.

Anyway, I currently own Trout Records in Georges St. Arcade and you can find me there most days if you want to stop in and have a chat. If any of you are familiar with it you will understand that displaying anything properly in there is fairly impractical. Either that or talk to me on here, email me at nicholas.rage@gmail.com.

    All the best

    Good stuff man,

Just a question, will you be linked in with the Irish charts (each sale counting for a position in the charts) or is it just an outlet for distribution?

When we went to do our single in May, Road couldn't do this but Tower could. Really helps when you can sell a hard copy to help your chart position and not have to give 70% to that downloadmusic.ie crowd

    Hey Steevood,

Im not having a go at you here just pointing out some points where i had issues with what you said :) Im in no way affiliated with downloadmusic.ie but exactly how much % do you think you are making by releasing the material through hard copy? The 33% you make is pure profit because otherwise you will have to give it away for free digitally or get a distribution deal for the larger market shares like i-tunes etc. (where take it from my experience you definitely don't make 33%)

If you are providing the physical single to a shop at lets say €1 a pop, Account then all the time and effort that has gone into the artwork, printing, copying, distribution, include here your time and im telling you now there is no way your making 33c per unit. so i wouldnt go around griping about downloadmusic taking a cut to cover their costs as they are providing a service invaluable to Irish musicians who cant get distribution deals.

Taken from Downloadmusic.ie terms and conditions for non licencing agency members (IMRO etc)

Artist will receive €0.33 per track sold for download. The balance is accounted for by monies retained by your mobile operator for SMS services, fees paid to Realex (Online Payment Provider), fees paid to Evalon (Merchant Account Provider), Bank Charges and a commission of 4c (inc. VAT) retained by downloadmusic.ie.
Note: Tracks sold on Pre-release will incur an extra nominal charge of 6c per track to cover the cost of sending the SMS reminder to the user
Note: All revenue arising from ticket sales is retained by artists
Note: Revenue per track may differ for sales made in other territories

the above all seems extremely reasonable to me.

Also bear in mind that if you are not registering the material properly with chart-track then physical single sales are questioned and generally revised downwards for the charts and you might not get your full sales numbers accounted for in physical terms. for example if you do an instore and dont let them know it pops up as an anomoly and if you shifted 200 units then they might not get counted to your chart allowance. it is much more difficult for them to question the digital numbers.

all in all though it is great to see another independent music shop where product can be stocked.

    Alan
