I think it would be a good idea that if you pay to see a film in the cinema you should get a reduced price dvd/blu-ray when it's released on those formats,
it might be a bit awkward to implement but if it could be done it would get more people to go to the cinema as a lot of people have a "I'll wait for the dvd" attitude towards a lot of films, they can get the big screen experience and get the cheaper dvd later on, plus it would be a nice little extra for all those who do support cinema.
Opt in of course, you wouldn't have to buy the dvd if you didn't want to.

A nice sentiment, but I personally think it would be nigh on impossible and absurdly messy to implement! Personally, I tend to buy only my favourites after seeing them in the cinema, most I've seen once and am happy enough to leave. DVD is a more for stuff I haven't seen or missed in the cinema, and of course the stuff that really is worth rewatching.

One of those ideas that would be nice in an ideal world (actually, films would be free and legal in an ideal world :pac:), but probably impossible in reality.

Steven Sodebergh wanted to start releasing his movies in the cinema and on dvd on the same day, giving people the option. didnt go down too well though.

Sicne Avatar has gotten people back into the cinema again thats why studios are jumping all over 3D so the cinema is more of an "experience"

I'm surprised the turnaround time from a film's run in theatres to home video release is getting shorter; i'd think that waiting 6 months, people would be ready to see the film again if they really liked it. If you had the choice of going to the cinema or DVD i'd just get the DVD in most cases; since it's free to re-watch.

Maybe another viable option would be they release it for 'rental' on netflix/XBL/PSN etc when in cinemas....but that would exacerbate the piracy problem since you're giving people access to a perfect HD source....

Anyway i'm of the same ilk that 'sure i'll just catch it on DVD in a few months' with a lot of films.

Depends on the movie, some stuff I'll wait for the dvd, some I'll go uot of my way to see, there was no way I was going to miss Inception in the cinema, but the Expendables I'll wait for on dvd as it'll more of a laugh with a few pissed friends.

See the problem with this is it gives plenty of time to bootleggers and illegal downloads to flood the market.
I think that why studios try get the dvd on the shelves a lot faster these days.

I think Jurassic Park had one of the longest periods between cinema release and VHS release.
