    hi all,
as you probably know i just baught a used ps3 40gb. since i have got it i have been trying to get it online some how. my dad got the local computer guy to come down and he said that we needed an ethernet switch. my dad and i thought it was a great idea but we have stumbled upon a problem. to get the signal to come through to the ps3 we would have to put a wire down through my mum and dads room through the ceiling and down the wall to the ps3. so i was wondering if anyone knows of any kind of switch that we could have the computer running on a n ethernet cable which is already there and getting the ps3 to run of wifi

    thanks

The PS3 can go online through wi-fi.
    Is your router wi-fi compatable?

If your not up on setting up a wifi network you can also get an adaptor to send your ethernet signals through your electrical sockets. http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/default_ShopGroup.asp?ShopGroupID=61
Just plug your router into your upstairs socket, and the ps3 into your downstairs socket. It'll save you a lot of drilling.

    hi there
just wondering, if the power supply where you plug in next to the router is on on a different circuit to the power sockets by the appliances will this still work

    thanks toby

My understanding is if your using it at home then all your electrical sockets are connected, so once you plug your router with the adapter into one of your electrical sockets, then any other electrical socket in your house can be used as a connection point. So anywhere you have a socket, you can have internet(depending on how many adapters you buy).
I use wifi myself but might go down this road later on, as i find i never get full 100% connection with my router unless im in the same room. My ps3 is usually around 50/60% connection which isn't great.

It has to be on the same mains supply. Standard houses would be.

one other question that i have is we were told thay if we got an ethernet switch we would be able to put a wire down to any other appliances. so if we got a switch would that do the same thing as a router or would we need router instead

a switch just basically splits the connection so a 4 port switch would usually have 5 connections, 1 is the line in and then 4 out

Only one router is needed as it is required for the internet connection, as stated the switch will allow for a few devices to be use in the same locations by splitting it without having many network power plugs or running Ethernet cable all over the house.

I have a router in my downstairs hall that connects to the internet, this is connected to an Ethernet cable(your case it'll be those plugs) that goes to the TV upstairs and is plugged into a switch, the switch is then connected to a ps3, 360 and a network drive at the TV with all being able to be used at the same time.

well i have an eircom broadband connection and router, i used to have NAT type 3 for ages, i spent months and months searching the net for solutions and spent countless hours trying to get type 2 or type 1 i almost pulled out my hair with frustration i was so pissed off with it.
    EVENTUALLY i found a solution.

i will tell you and HOPEFULLY it will work and you get type 1 or even type 2 is supposed to be very good, the settings below is based on my eircom router i use it wirelessly using a wpa-psk password key.

    >go to network settings

    >internet network settings

    >network setting method > custom
    >scan

    >WLAN > SCAN

    >WPA- enter wpa or if you dont have click automatic

    > IP address settings > custom

    > pppoe: enter your provider username (i have eircom connection) it should be broadband1 for all eircom users

    >pppoe password: enter the password here (again you need to ring your broadband provider for this just ask them for your pppoe username and password)

    >DNS settings > automatic

    >MTU > manual > set to 1500

    >proxy server > do not use

    >UPnP > enable

    press save settings >

    >go to test connection it should hopefully come up as type 1, try it anyways its worth a try, worked for me,

If you internet connection comes through a dish then what ever you were given for the connection will be fine, an Ethernet switch will split any cable, those network plug will get the connection around, and if wanted a wireless adapter connected to the switch will allow Wi-Fi in the house.

i recently had issue, i purchased a router (50 euro)from vodafone and have usb stick from them. I pay 24 euro month. the device can connect up to 4 devices.
works fine , for me play online. took 2 mins to set up via playstation.
this is best way i found.
