I recently bid on something on ebay but did not win,Today I recieved an email from the seller to say I could I could now buy the item for the price I was prepared to go to .Why would this happen ,:confused:Iam a bit scepitcal that the seller may have been bidding on the item himself to drive up the price:eek:,however i would be happy to pay the price that I left as my highest bid.

2nd Chance Offers are pretty common practice and are standard functionality with eBay. Typically it's a case of the seller have multiple instances of the same item they want to sell or in some cases the original deal falling through for whatever reason.

There shouldn't be anything to worry about... I've purchased many items via 2nd Chance.

sometimmes the winning bidder doesnt reply to the seller or wants it shipped to a country the seller is not keen on shipping to

ebay can spot sellers driving up their own prices from a mile away these days unlike when ebay was new

if its an item you want id probably take it

Watch the timeframe between winning bid and 2nd chance offer received , - as its possible that the winning bidder received his item , and for some reason returned it to seller .

The seller would then offer the item to bidders that did'nt win .

The seller saves money here as he only pays final value fees .

Before agreeing to buy , check the sellers feedback ,in case the first auction did'nt work out with the buyer .
Indeed you could also contact original buyer and ask him why he is not going ahead with transaction , although of course you cannot believe his reply -

And you are correct that the seller may have bid on the item himself , or indeed one of his friends , in order to drive up the price .

Bit late to mention this but if this was a genuine ebay second chance offer then there would have also been a msg in your ebay account messages.

The rules might have changed since I had a similar experience a few years back but the basics seem the same almost instantly after the end of the auction I got a second chance offer email which after some checking with eBay I accepted. What seems to have happened in my case at least was that the seller had a whole load of the same item and gave a second chance offer to anyone who bid over a certain amount, when I checked with eBay they told me that the seller could use the second chance offer if he had more than one of the item for sale.
