Hook declared just now on Newstalk that if Bertie runs for the President job he will run as an anti Bertie candidate. Is this a new low for Ireland?

He declared that last year and about every week since. He'd be no worse than any of the rest of them.

he's been saying this for the guts of a year now. he won't have to though, bertie won't even get the fianna fail nomination. prepare for a stab in the back, just like albert got when mary mcaleese got the nod for '97.

If the people vote for a "chancer" like Ahern they deserve everything they get.

    The rest of who??
    Higgins, Finlay and Norris.

Yeah anyone got a list of who has been sounding out the public or that has declared already?

These have all indicated interest. Note that G Hook says he'd go only if Bertie goes for it.

    Fergus Finlay
    Michael D. Higgins
    David Norris
    Bertie Ahearn
    George Hook

Could G Hook live with the loss of his SKY adds from the TV and the lovely money he earns from it to run against Bertie? I can't see him allowed to still advertise on TV while campaigning for political office.

Question, those that might bow out of the race once voting is done, can they transfer their votes to another canidate afterwards?

If so, maybe they can all knock out Bertie that way should the miserable mug run!

None of them inspire any confidence. Nobody there I'd like to see become president :(

Voting is the same as General Elections, Single Transferrable Vote. This is why I think Ahern has no chance, he might do OK with Nr 1's, but he won'r get transfers. Bit like Brian Lenihan in 1990. He lost out on Austin Curries transfers.

Yeah. I thought the same (above). I think the Presidency along with the Seanad should get the chop.

I'm sure he'll still have the use of the "technology" from sky

If true that the transfer system can still apply, thank God, Allah, Mother Nature and even the flying spaghetti monster for that!

yeah thats what Ireland needs . A media whore in the Aras. Said office is a bit of a joke anyway so why not Hookie. Trouble is what Hookie would we be sold this time? The liberal social democrat he pretends to be when talking to that falangist bully boy Graham that he invites on his show or the right wing hang em flog em Hookie when commenting on Irish events? For all his talk he comes over as very poorly informed sometimes.

The prospect of Ahern running for president is ludicrous as it is... I don't see how adding Hook in would make things any worse then

If Hook transfers a few votes away from the little bollox Aherne, losing him the Áras to another candidate - preferably Finlay - then job done.

Hookie would make a great president. I'd vote for him if I could.

    +1

The lack of political office would be a benefit I think, and he's somebody people actually know of and care about unlike all these faceless politicians who just run with the prevailing sentiment

Nine times out of ten George Hook just states what most people are thinking. He does a lot for charity as well and I know he works pretty hate for Haven partnership.

Forget to add that any guy who likes Rugby and Indian food ( he loves Jaipur in Dalkey) would get my vote anyway.

Dustin the Turkey would get my No 1! If Dustin can compete in the eurovision is there anything stopping him from running for president. What are the rules? Would'nt it be fantastic to see him greet foreign heads of state and giving out the seals of office. I feel a groundswell already.

while true to a certain extent from listening to the show long term he does have quite strong set view about many things. He can also be very open to other viewpoints and argue them strongly but fairly if he disagrees. He does also go off the wall sometimes, but at least its funny :)

That would be legendary, can you imagine what the rest of the world would think though :D

if Vincent Kearney were to run I'd imagine he'd get quite a few votes

I'll vote for whoever will consolidate these poxy presidential threads....

Wouldn't him running just take votes off bertie's opponents?

I mean its not like a bertie voter's gonna go "actually, think I'll vote for that guy who's running to stop my first choice getting in"

Confidence? A trained monkey could be the president of Ireland and they'd still be no better or worse than all the other ones we've had. :D

No disrespect to the Marys, but it's a fairly easy gig to pull off.

I think it would be the Centrist George Hook, which is what he is.
