About to make a purchase on a laptop, the laptop in question has 4GB RAM but a friend said that the laptop may only recognise up to 3GB and the extra 1GB wouldn't be of any use, and I may aswell save money and get a 3gb

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?? is this true?

also anyone any good links for laptops online that deliver to ireland or suggestions of a decent laptop for around €400

    thanks :)

Innaccurate but true. XP 32bit will see something like 3.24GB(cant remember exactly off the top of my head). Vista and seven aren't so straight forward.
Version Limit in 32-bit Windows Limit in 64-bit Windows
Windows Vista Ultimate 4 GB 128 GB

Windows Vista Enterprise 4 GB 128 GB

Windows Vista Business 4 GB 128 GB

Windows Vista Home Premium 4 GB 16 GB

Windows Vista Home Basic 4 GB 8 GB

Windows Vista Starter 1 GB Not applicable
Version Limit in 32-bit Windows Limit in 64-bit Windows
    Windows 7 Ultimate 4 GB 192 GB

    Windows 7 Enterprise 4 GB 192 GB

    Windows 7 Professional 4 GB 192 GB

Windows 7 Home Premium 4 GB 16 GB

Windows 7 Home Basic 4 GB 8 GB

    Windows 7 Starter 2 GB 2 GB

The differences between 32 and 64 Bit are cost, memory limits, CPU restrictions(Most cores support 64), Driver issues(not everything is 64bit compatible!).

Also remember, and video memory is included in those limits, but you are unlikely to have dedicated memory at that budget.

NOTE: 400 wont get a gaming laptop, but will do fine for general tasks(everything but media editing/heavy coding/gaming).

If your buying this in a shop, they aren't going to open, take out one stick of ram throw it away and give you a twenty euro discount.

If you buy an OS, you get a disc with 64 bit, and 32 bit, can't jsut buy one. If you buy OEM, it's 32bit only (usually) mem limits are 4GB total, including VRAM, If your processor is anyway recent, (ie within the last 3-4 years) it SHOULD support 64 bit, very unlikely that it wouldn't.
There's no driver issues so to speak, just in alot of cases 64 bit dedicated drivers aren't available and the 32 bit ones areused instead. I haven't found anything incompatible with x64, except PartitionMaster, the free version..
