Importing car from UK

I've bought a 2008 car in the UK. My friend is picking it up from dealership on Saturday and I'll collect it from his house in London the following weekend. I'll be transferring my current insurance to the car before I go over there so that I'm insured driving it back to Ireland. However, in the meantime, I'll need to insure it from once he collects it until I pick it up. Can I do that through an Irish broker or will I need to organise that in the UK? Also, the car will be registered in my name from Saturday, but obviously the paperwork won't have come back before I collect the car. Will be this a problem?

The car won't be registered in your name until it's processed so carry a copy of all paperwork.

Also get a copy of the insurance transfer from your insurer to prove you are insured.

Thanks for that. Do you know if I'll need to find an insurer in the UK to cover it for the week in between it being picked up from dealership until I pick it up?

    Sorry have no idea.

If you transfer your own insurance they should cover it.

But you can't drive your own car then

Should you not be getting the entire registration document from the dealer when it is for export. The way you are doing it, you will need a uk address I think.

Does your friend have his own car insurance, maybe he could transfer his over temporarily until he gets it back to his house and then park it up in his drive until you arrive?

    1. Transfer your insurance temporarely to the car you are buying before Saturaday, and add your friend as a named driver (just for this one day).

    2. What do you mean that car will be registered in your name from saturday? That's impossible. It can't be registered in your name in Ireland, because it is not registered in Ireland at all so far (up to the moment you pay VRT). It also can't be registered at your name in UK, as you are not restident in UK. Only way to do it, is just to get the registration certificate (V5C) from the dealer, even if it stated the previous owner details. That's the procedure, because I don't thing there's any way to register car tempararily in UK for nonresidents.

I didn't realise I could have the entire registration document, I thought part of it would have to be sent off to DVLA. Shows how unprepared I am! Thanks for your help.

    You are right about that.
One part indicating "permanent export" has to be sent to DVLA.

The "permanent export" section does not have to be sent to the DVLA. This section is for use when the owner of the vehicle is exporting the car themselves (if they were emigrating, for example).
Having said that it doesn't really matter if that section is sent away, the DVLA will just ignore it.
The important thing is to ensure you get the V5 ( the VRT crowd over here will send this back to the DVLA when the car is re-registered) as it is almost impossible to register the car here without it.
