Think it's a bit dated looking at this stage, this on the other hand http://www.carzone.ie/search/Mercedes-Benz/CL-Class/500/201025198505385/advert?channel=CARS :)

I might be doing the same with a 740 over the coming weeks, same engine. If you have the cash, go for it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

Anyone who only does a small number of miles per year should really be experimenting with all sorts. 840 would be a reasonable place to start although why not 850?

Dated looking???! I think, it aged pretty well, one of the nicest looking BMWs ever produced. Go for it!

I've no idea about the 8 series, known issues, quirks, nothin...nada...anyone out there have a clue about them?

of course you are a bit nuts, but there are enough ordinary,(prob too many)people in the world.

The celtic tiger has left this country awash with big motors/floats, they wont be as available in the future. Good luck with the car.

Even though they aren't 8 series spec, the M-Parallels are made for this car:

I'm thinking the same on a Land Rover Defender ...always wanted one, and now I'm in a position to get one .... it'll probably break my heart with reliability issues .... and the ride will rattle me to the bone, but I think for the sheer driving pleasure on the right day .......thats got to be priceless !!
Get the beamer ..... or you'll be saying .... what if ?? I remember Clarkson reviewing it on old "Top Gear " ... and I just thought it was just Automotive Porn !!!:D I was about 12 at the time !:P

Hardly mint, a *mint* E38 will set you back £6000-£7000 + VRT.

Currently in a '99 735 and there's only a handful of cars that I would like to change it for (and that I could afford):

    BMW 740 (late E38)
BMW 840 (850 a lot higher maintenance IMO)
    Audi S8 (late D2)

    Go for it dude!

Do it, they're great cars and guaranteed classic supercar. I don't think they'll ever look dated.

The 840 4.4L is the one to go for. quicker then the 850 with less of the bills.

I'm definatly getting one myself once my trusty 740 gives up the ghost, but its still going strong for the moment.

The 840 is a 4.4 V8, pretty much bullet proof and trouble free engine once looked after (early 840's were actually 4L). The 850, while more rare and more desireable, is a 5.0 V12 (the CSI is uber rare and 6-speed manual) but a lot more of a handful, especially when / if things go wrong.

have always wanted one of these. one of the really great cars. unfortunately any time i look at them a lot have been modified and look terrible. if you can get a clean, original one go for it

    fancy one of these too:

Heresy! It's a bit like the Phaeton - unappreciated by the public in it's own time. Especially since BMW recently admitted that the prototype M8 still exists.

Not a bad example at all, body in decent shape too. But things that make it less desireable and hence the lower price are the high mileage, non colour coded skirts, amber corners, non-sport pack, older phone, no parking sensors, no sat nav etc. Also no mention of history which is unusual unless there are patchy records.

I'm a purest myself, but there's nothing wrong with newer bmw wheels on the 8! Those blade type alloys on the 8 seriously date it I think, even if they are original.

M-pars knock 10 years off it. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree! :pac:

It's not that they don't look well, but every time I look at them I think 'they don't belong there'. Saw a 635 (E24) with multi-spoke E38/9 alloys recently which also looked well and gave it an Alpina look but to me it was just wrong. I like the blades, the 8ers with BBS give a dated look IMO.

    New 7 en route dude?

If you go for one, go with one with a nice color. Avoid green etc. Yellow does not suit all cars, but I think it suits particularly well the 8.

The Yellow 8er looks fantastic alright, it was my preference for colour when I was looking, but couldnt find a Yellow CSI (think only 1 in RHD and wasnt forsale). But hey, always time for a Vinyl Wrap! :)

    Mine is Fjord Grey:
    IMG_0793copy.jpg?t=1283982939

Everyday not driving it (driving my daily driver to work) is torture. From the suspension setup to the performance, to the near Targa top "openess" of having all windows down with no B pillars separating them, the car does so many things so right.
There is absolutely nothing interesting about the more pedestrian CL Merc by comparison.

    Not V10, V12! 850i's are 5.0 V12's and 850CSi's are 5.6 V12's.

Reason not to get the 840? Cos the car is a 12 cylinder cruiser, 850 or bust! The 840 was introduced as the cheaper option and was more popular only in the UK, every other market the V12 was the main model. In late 94 the M70 5.0 was replaced (not in UK, only the 840 continued till 99) with a 5.4 M73 version, still called the 850i. There were plans for an 830i too (how aweful, a 6pot 8er) but the market for the car collapsed in the last recession and there was no point in more models.

The 850CSi is a whole other ball game, its a proper M Car.
    IMG_0790copy.jpg
    And on the Dyno:

Ah, the V12 jet engine scream..

For some reason in the last 2 years 8er's have been getting more and more popular with enthusiasts. Good times.

PS: Im half joking about the 840, the V8 is a good engine, chassis is lighter, mods better, sounds great too.
PPS: How dated and tired an 8er looks depends on the wheels and the paintwork. The stock wheels (Style 5s) look woeful IMO.
    Ok one last thing:
    MCMLXXV wrote: »

M Pars are original parts spec E31 (8 series in non-BMW speak) wheels, long before the E39 and before they were available on the E38!
    http://bmwmregistry.com/model_faq.php?id=11
The M8 prototype ran M Pars for instance (without the outer face).

I didnt watch that episode, but my impression from various forums is our labour rates for Indy work is way, way cheaper than in the UK. I had guys there calling BS on some of the work I had done here on a budget. Parts are expensive here, but our time isnt.

Don't worry, I ain't buying (bought recently myself)! I was interested in an absolute stunner in NI a few months ago. Stratus Grey exterior; Ecru/Petrol Individual interior. You quite likely know the one. However I felt there was a potential major pitfall with the car the owner wasn't exactly advertising. Drop me a PM if you need more info.

Hmm, maybe this is the case. One thing thats for sure is the sheer availability of parts in the UK far exceeds here, must be a pleasure to get parts shipped for near nothing.

I know the exterior colour, but the Individuals can be anything, hence I didnt cop the "petrol" interior. One i'm after is an Individual too with every 750 option. *rubs hands*
