Orthotics - where to get assessed?

    Hello

I have been advised (by a physio) to get orthotic insoles for runners and shoes due to problems with calf and shin muscles(and basically my entire legs)

Where do I go for proper assesment and fitting?

    regards

Or you could get a second opinion from a different physio? Some physios seem to be faster to recommend orthotics than others.

    Agreed.

there are a multiplicity of possible causes for any injury.

mind you the days of faradism (passing current through water and your feet) to make them "stronger" are thankfully gone

My physio advises never buying orthotics from a physio as there is a 10 week course some do as an add on and call themselves experts, In the UK there is a degree course build around orthotics. There's a specialist in Maynooth and two in Cappagh Orthopaedic Hospital.

Or find someone who focuses on fixing the issue actively (foot/toe muscle exercises) rather than passively (orthotics etc). As someone who has orthotics for a good few years
I'm still not convinced they're the way to go. Got some help lately from a physio who has me doing all kinds of contortions with my toes and it's helping.
Think whilst they may be a necessity for some, orthotics should be used only as part of a solution, not "the" solution.

I have been recommended to get them by two different physios

Do you have any medical insurance - some cover the cost of consultations and the orthotics themselves. Are your injuries running related? If so maybe you should consider Chi-running or even using barefoot running shoes as alternatives

    Cheers for the replies

I'm going to a chiropractor next week to get my hip alignment checked out first, before I go for foot assessment

Couple of mates have gone aboard to be sorted out, & now I reckon they must be on commission as they recommend him to everyone!
