Given an iPhone 4

    I was given an iPhone 4 (firmware 1.59.00) on 4.0.2.

    Is there presently any way to unlock this from O2?

    Would be a shame to have it go to waste!

    Ah, sure don't go to all that trouble of changing your network and getting it unlocked. Just give it to me to save yourself all the hassle. :p

    Yeah but ya need to jailbreak it to get the unlock tool. Whatever ya do don't update to 4.1
    There's no jb for 4.0.2 at the min so sit tight

    No jailbreak for 4.02 , 4.1 out today but I think from reading online the unlock and jailbreak will be for 4.2 which will be releases in November

    Ask who gave it to you to ask O2 to unlock it through iTunes

    I jailbroke my iPod touch 2G on 4.0.2 using redsn0w but I don't know if it works for iPhone 4 worth checking out tho .

    OP enquired about unlocking, not jailbreaking

    Jailbreaking allows you to use non Apple apps
    Unlocking means you can use with other sims

    Unlocking by software is currently not possible on 4.0.2
    Unlocking by O2 is possible with any OS version - thus my recommendation
