I dunno, my uncle doesn't have an account and told me to put it up,
something to do with the minister waving the tuam star around i think

The government reassures the public with their intellect and sill once more

Good thread on The Pin about the whole sham

Yeah, Ó Cuív was a bit cringe-worthy when he did that. It was definitely a "What the fúck?" moment.

Not to digress too much, but I've never found the exact quote from the Skibberean Eagle about the Tzar of Russia, now that you mention it. The nearest I've come is from Brewer: it allegedly wrote an article warning one Lord Palmerston that it had 'got its eye both upon him and on the Emperor of Russia'. Anybody have any further info?

    And guess what!
The digital version of the Tuam Herald newspaper is no longer available online.
We are currently in the process of
    developing a new subscription service.

    http://www.tuamherald.ie/tuam-herald-online.htm

So we either have to go to Tuam to get the details of O'Cuiv's new devious plan, or pay to read it online !

I think if they searched the whole of Ireland they couldn't have found a more unsuitable person for the position of Minister for Social 'Protection'.

He has just dingled the Social Welfare !

The Southern Star ( which incorporates the Skibbereen Eagle) commented on that a couple of years ago......

Perhaps the most famous moment, world wide, for The Skibbereen Eagle was when it became embroiled in international relations with Russia in 1898 which became known as “keeping an eye on Russia”.

Rather grandly the editorial claimed: “It [The Eagle] will still keep its eye on the Emperor of Russia and all such despotic enemies – whether at home or abroad – of human progression and man’s natural rights which undoubtedly include a nation’s right to self-government. ‘Truth’, ‘Liberty’, ‘Justice’ and the ‘Land for the People’ are the solid foundations on which the Eagle’s policy is based.”

The intrepid editor and proprietor Frederick Potter used in his editorial a report on a secret treaty by Russia [the Eagle is keeping its eye on the Emperor]. This phrase became famous over several decades causing at one point the embarrassed Irish Times to make an uncomplimentary reference in somewhat disdainful fashion, though it later apologised, regretting “its hasty and inadvertent blunder”. By then, however, the bold little newspaper was famous for the “eye on Russia” saga.

Some of the best professionals have assisted the politicians in ruining us.

We need to rid ourselves of this culture "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours"

Why bother with Dail Éireann when most of them are making their decisions (and back handers) at the Golf club.
