    Hi All,

As per the title, I have left it rather late to pick up a laptop for college, starting in a week or so. In theory I could wait a few more days after this but I'd like to get it ASAP.

I'm reasonably techie, and will be using this 3 hours most days for at least 3 years in college, but also for other stuff like browsing, movies, music etc. I'll prob have a bit of OCR and dictation software installed, but nothing too system-intensive at all.

I want to get something with a decent i5, 4GB+ of DDR3 (maybe expandable), about 14-15" in size, and 4+ hours battery life. HDD isn't hugely NB - 300GB+ would be nice. I will be commuting with it everyday too.

I'd like to keep it under €1k if at all possible. I also notice I can get 8% off Dells until tomorrow (was originally looking at the (i7?) Studio XPS 16). I'm open on make except for Acer and the budget HP/Compaq's. Sleekness would be nice/NB, comfort of typing will be a biggie too.

What's the argument against Mac's these days (apart from pricing)? It looks to me like the processors/clock speeds suffer in the ~€1k bracket versus Windows equivalents. Is this an accurate observation?

Really appreciate any help you can give me guys...

I don't have any specific recommendations at the mo, but if it's your first week at college i really wouldn't worry, not much is going to happen!

As for laptops, imo, try keep it as in the 11.6" to 13" range, anything bigger is just a complete pain in the hole to bring in every day. I know there'll be exceptions to that, but most of the time, a slim and light is the way to go.

Although you seem against acers, I could not reccomend a laptop more.

The best ultraportable outside of the Sony V series, which are 3 times the price. Has a dual fan system making it one of the coolest running laptops available, battery life a comfortable 6hrs under browsing and mid-high screen brightness on 6 cell. This model looks to be the elusive 9 cell whivh should see a significant increase.
Mainly its form factor is amazing...1inch thick and less than 2kg weight, perfect for college.
HD 5470 is able to handle light-medium gaming...it is a shame though the HD 5650 version is not available here.
