Do you have to print a Boarding pass online for Aer Lingus like you do with Ryanair or do you just check in at the Airport?
It's a flight to Europe BTW.

You can do it at the airport, without charge

what I usually do is check in online as early as possible, so I can get a decent seat, then choose the "Collect Ticket from Kiosk" option and print the boarding card out at the airport.

I only have a netbook at home and no printer, so this is a good option for me.

Does choosing a seat not cost you extra?

No. At check-in, it's free. The seat fee is levied on those who do not realize that and run into Aer Lingus' trap.

i'm travelling from heathrow to shannon in a few weeks? can i check in and pick up the card from the machine, or is this european flights only.

i'm flying over on ryanair and won't be within the time frame for a home check in, so this might save me a trip to the internet cafe (will have lap top with me, but obviously no printer).

Not sure if Aer Lingus have machines in Heathrow. But even if not - check-in at the desk is free with Aer Lingus. No worries there. Just show up at the airport.

    I think they do.

However you can still check in online even if there is no machine at the airport and choose collect from fast pass kiosk and then get it at the bag drop/check in desk in heathrow.

So yes check in online regardless and get the seat you want rather than whats left.

Aer Lingus have several check in machines at Heathrow. You have to use them before you drop your bags off. There are about four by the check in desks and a couple by the Ticket desk.
