why don't you try a few online quotes and call a few companys? it very much differs from person to person.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,754 ✭✭✭oldyouth

Depends on what you consider 'being screwed'. Class 2 cover generally dictates that higher mileage is being done and hence, an increased risk. Online insurers usually are only geared for class 1 cover, so contact 2 reputable insurance brokers, explain your circumstances and let them pitch for your business

Pretty much same as you, including class 2, except I am living in Dublin and I'm paying 250 per year or thereabouts.

What I did do was check what the insurance company had my car valued at, it was still at it's initial value (11k or so) so I had them drop it to it's actual value of 3k.

It depends on the car. My car is worth less than €8k but its seen as one of the highest risk cars around, hence me getting ridiculously high quotes if I even get them at all.

    That depends on:

    1. Your risk profile
    2. The exact cars involved
    3. The insurance company in question.

People, there's only one way to pay as little as possible for the cover you want and that's to shop around. Don't bother with online quotes, take out the Golden Pages, and ring every ins co and a good selection of brokers. If there's an issue which may be a problem (car type, class of cover, convictions, etc) , disclose it at the start of the conversation.

The market value of the car has only a small bearing on the premium. The major factor is the driver, followed by the car.

Is there any group scheme such as through a Union you can join?
I found those 'lady' policies very dear.

The only ones who can answer this question for you are the insurance companies. Pick up the phone, shop around for the best quote.

Agreed. Theres no such things as an "average" price, as they will quote differently based on every criteria. And theres no good saying to them "but someone on the internet got it for €x with similar criteria" either; that aint gonna work!

Phone book out, ring around. Its the only way to get the best quote.

Pretty impressed with Eur250 Silverfish! How much milage do you do?? I was starting to reckon the Class 2 going against me - do 14,000 a year approx. Did shop around and got little variation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,851 ✭✭✭Glowing

Female, 30, Fully Comp on a 1.8 convertable for 489. First time I've had my own insurance policy too.

I got the best deal with Hibernian Aviva - got the quote through insure.ie, phoned up and asked who the insurer was, then went direct and saved 40 quid (is that bold?)

    YES!!!!:D

What is it then? Have shoped around and got little difference. Isd it that my milage is so high? 14k approx p.a. I have seen little drop in my insurance costs despite being a squeaky clean claims free driver for nearly 20yrs.
Am paying 475 with Quinn (and that only with10% discount)

I renewed anyway as i'm on a 3 policy thing and get 10%discount and free annual travel insurance for what it's worth but haven't payed out yet- have 14 days to do so. Think i have 14 days to change my mind - is that right? Or only regards new policies?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

14k miles per year is not high.

If you are claim free for that long why do you only have 10% no claims discount?

If you have shopped around and they are all saying the same thing then that is the price Im afraid. Theres no magic trick to getting it for cheaper; you get a quote and can haggle, but ultimately the only way to get the best quote is to ring everyone and then go with the quote that comes in cheapest.

As said before in this thread, Class two implies higher mileage. And not wanting to get into a gender war here, but females are more likley to crash per mile driven. It stands to reason your charge would be higher due to this.

I don't see any difference for women drivers TBH...

I've held a licence for 15 years, full NCB in the UK, but only two years here as couldn't prove it (Long story...). I have my husband as named driver with a permit, but still paying quite a lot of money IMO. My FiL has fully comp insurance, full NCB, no pen points discount and has been driving since Adam was a boy:p. He pays very little less than I do!!

I'm going to go to a broker at renewal time. Didn't realise that brokers exist for retail business and can often get you a cheaper quote. In the UK, you just call direct or go online (which is often cheaper).

Another thing which I think is pretty outrageous is the fact that windscreen cover is OPTIONAL here even if you have fully comp! Why is that?? The roads here are pretty awful, full of potholes which makes it MORE likely you'll get a stone strike. This is a mickey-take as far as I'm concerned, and it's just another way to screw more money out of the Irish motorist. I thought UK insurers were bad, but this is worse!!!:mad::mad:

In all my time of getting insurance quotes I dont think Ive ever gotten a fully comp quote that didnt include windscreen cover. I wouldnt even entertain one that didnt tbh.

Comp always includes windscreen cover, and no company i've ever dealt with takes windscreen claims into account when calculating NCB.

Using the Ryanair model of pricing, there are a few companies that offer fully comp, but missing stuff like windscreen cover, driving other cars, no claims bonus protection.

Nononsense.ie gave me by far the cheapest quote, but by the time I added the extra's I'd want it went to more than €130 more than my renewal.

Quinn's "comprehensive" doesn't. It provides breakdown cover but not windscreen cover, surreally.

Unless windscreens are specifically excluded they'd be covered under comp in the same way as any other part of the car. They would be subject to an excess, and NCB may be affected, but i've never heard of a comp package that doesn't cover glass. Still and all, nobody should expect that comp covers everything - it's important to compare quotes for similar cover.

Quinn doesn't in Ireland, but does in the UK....

Aviva do not offer 'free' windscreen cover either. Nor does Allianz!

This is a serious question. Could someone please enlighten me as to which Irish insurance companies DO offer windscreen cover as part of a fully comp policy?

Apologies for going 'off-topic', but if the mods want to start a new thread, then that's fine by me!

    TIA

I'm with Aviva (comp) and windscreen cover is included with my policy - it's endorsement PC71. I have a complete premium breakdown, and I pay extra for a protected NCD, for open driving, and for a reduced excess.

In my time Ive been insured with ARB, Axa, Eagle Star (now Zurich), and now Setanta and all have had windscreen cover that doesnt affect NCB. Ive gotten quotes from Quinn, Britton, 123.ie and I think FBD and again all have included windscreen cover. Like I said, Id laugh at any company that didnt include it as part of fully comp.

Like I say, in the UK it's included and nobody would dream of even asking as it would be standard. If you claim for the windscreen, then the NCB would not be affected.

It's just that here, I'm still getting used to the system...I take it then that the companies you've quoted provide this cover at no extra charge for a fully comp policy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Yeah it was just part of the policy I was quoted for. I asked if it was included in a kind of "I assume windscreen cover is included, yeah" kind of way but I never expected them to say no.

Yes, my premium has the add-ons like windscreen cover, NC bonus protection. the 10% discount mentioned earlier was on the premium cos i have multiple policies - 10% off 525 =475ish. In the end, I decided that the total of my 3 policies health, house and motor and the fact that there's free annual travel insurance thrown in, that it's prob pretty much as good as I'm gonna get. The 30/40 Eur i save with another compnay, I save on travel insurance and I try to go on at least one trip abroad a year....
    thanks to all!
