I've a young bull about 5 months or so. I noticed yesterday that his sac (scrotum) is swollen up, almost hard.

Anyone ever come across this before?
    What could be the causes?
    Time to call the Vet?

is he in pain , if so get the vet , there could be a twist or something , if not in pain leave him for a few days and see if he straightens himself out

    Thanks for the replies.
I dont think he is in pain. I really only spotted it be accident as I'm training them (weanlings) to eat meal at the moment. I put him in the crush and he did winch though when I handled him.
I had an older heifer bulling with them last week. This bull showed no interest in her. He's very young and wasnt fighting either as he is in a well settled group.
It looks like retained fluid or something. It's similar to what it would be like if done with a burdizzo, but normal enough colour, a little red maybe.

I'm inclined to leave him for a few days and keep an eye on him.

Sounds like an infection. I hope he's not breeding material.

has he been done for blackleg - ie to cover tetanus etc - or maybe a wasp could have stung him:eek:

I had a calf about 3 months when he swole up to the size of a mature bull. The vet said there was some kind of a deformity on one of the testicals and would be diffcult to do anything to put it right. I did not intend to keep him on as a bull so the vet put a rubber band on him and the whole lot fell off him in a few weeks.

Update - just for the record.

10 days later now and the swelling has gone down almost fully.
Didn't get the Vet, just kept an eye on him.

the farmer is a well known suffolk breeder from co cork, I actually saw him at Limerick with his sheep which is I believe the date the incident happened, As a guarda investigation is taking place, i think it would be best not to post too much heresay on this forum, some of the tabloids have already taken care of that
