    Hi.

What is the best use of an external hard drive backup on a macbook?

Is leaving the 1TB in one partition and just using time machine the best?

    Thanks in advance.

Depends on what meets your requirements.

I have a Western Digital 2TB My Book Studio II connected to my Mac mini server. It was pricey enough at €260 but it's upgradeable - when 2TB drives no longer cost a premium I'll swap out the 1TB drives. Instead of TimeMachine, I have a .DMG of a base install of the system and file backups are done with Parachute.

For my MacBook Pro I use a 750GB My Passport drive for day to day backups. Occasionally it gets backed up to an old 3.5" SATA drive using a NewerTech Voyager S2 hard drive dock.

For off site storage I use SugarSync and nightly backups use Mozy Home.

I also have a bootable 2.5" external drive with a bare system on it which can be used in emergencies.

This is complete overkill for the average user, but I need it for work purposes.

Wow - but yeah if you have stuff you really really can't lose it is needed, especially if you have it for work also.

I was thinking I might partition it to use one half for time machine and a complete system image on the other and just have the time machine as a backup for my music which i also split and uploaded in zips online.

I would recommend using TM to back up everything. That way if your hard drive fails you only have to restore once and you'll be back up and running with everything almost exactly as you left it.

Ye, but most of what I have heard about TM was bad.

Just generic moaning? Is it the best option - especially as I will be adding music and editing projects etc.
