Changing location of Kitchen to another room

    Hi,
I am looking for advice on whether my idea is absurd and will cost megabucks or whether it can be done within a reasonable budget.

We live in a semi-detached house. Our kitchen is currently at the end of a long narrow room, with the kitchen sink under the window at the end.

I am in the process of getting quotes for a new kitchen, but currently running into problems because of lack of space for all the appliances we need in a modern kitchen!

Adjoining this long room is a large square dining room. To me, it would be a much better size for the kitchen and allow more scope for the design, but involves new plumbing for the sink, waste, dishwasher, washing machine etc. There is a drain on this outside wall, but I am assuming the work also involves how the mains water comes into the rest of the house?

What kind of effort is required to do something like this? As you can probably read I have no clue.

What should I consider before asking a plumber for quotes?

    Thanks for your help !

This is a very broad question with little detail.
I would suggest you do a rough layout of the new kitchen showing the positions of appliances etc. You could use the free kitchen planner from IKEA. I think B&Q have one as well.

You will need to consider electric sockets, cooker/hob point and extractor fan.
Your wiring will most likely need to be upgraded or replaced.
As already mentioned the mains water supply and waste from sink, dishwasher and washing machine.
Mark these on your drawing and you would then be in a position to get quotes from plumber, electrician, tiler/plasterer and kitchen fitter. (A kitchen fitter would often do the electrics and plumbing but in this type of case you would need the professionals.
I am sure there are other items to consider but that's all I can think of at the moment.

What Danjo said. It can be a farily major undertaking to do, plus the fact that you will have the house out of order for a certain period. Also bear in mind that the water will have to be moved, the mains feed, as it most likely feeds the upstairs to the water tank also. You might also need radiators moved. Wiring can be quite expensive, and with sockets especially if you opt for a finished socket like brass or that. You'll find it really difficult to get a price from anyone without them looking at the house first of all to get an idea of what is where.

    Were are you based?
