You've been to the RTE website? What's it like? Do they make you enter your debit card number when you register?

I don't see the ad. I guess they must have worked out that I don't need electricity.

Adblock plus has been the greatest development in the browser world in the last year.

Available on Firefox and chrome, no more ads, banners at all, it stops them from loading which also saves bandwidth and speed up page loads.

If everyone did that, how would the loss of revenue affect sites like Boards.ie?

Yeah it stops that annoying "get this mobile NOW" musical pop up whenever I try to go to o2 just to send a webtext.

Installing AdBlock and then when the ad comes up (if it does) there should be a tab on it saying "block" click on that and breath a sigh of relief. Hurray!

    Super sweet!

I turned off Javascript last night for the crack. Everything loaded seriously quick...but basically nothing worked. This is perfect. Nice one

Someone else mentioned it the other day. So, I've been clicking the odd ad since and feigning interest. Every little helps.

If you download the block lists you should never have to click the block button at all, and never see an ad.

I've never seen an ad get past adblock.

    (Not aimed at boards)

Websites have a responsibility to not shove pop-ups and noises in your face, ads which obstruct the content and make noises will see a quick use of ad-block, and rightly so.

If sites and advertisers showed some respect we wouldn't have to do it, but look at tv, it gets louder at the ads, shouting at you to turn it off or down, on the web you block them altogether, and generally advertisers have only other advertisers to blame.

Why do people block ads in the first place? They distract from content and annoy you, "Helloooo" in a nasily american voice and a smiley popping up and waving at you, seriously, this was innevitable.

I'm with you on that. I despise the majority of advertising in the mainstream media and online.

I was just throwing it in there in relation to the viability of this place.

Think of the amount of traffic boards gets from guests and non contributors to the site, people from google searches ect, im pretty sure them alone would allow for a viable revenue alone.

I think regular posters and contributors to the site should have a ad free experience, which boards does do, as you only get banners at the top and bottom when your logged in.

And not in relation to boards i think many sites have abused the advertising system and made solutions like adblock necessary.

Go to preferences > add subscriptions and select Easylist & fanboys list, that should have neary all ad servers covered and you shouldn't have to manually block ads.

    Don't know/care :)

I don't like ads of any kind (internet/tv/print/billboards etc.), and there's no reason I shouldn't block them on the internet if I can; perfectly within rights to block any kind of content I like on the internet.
Internet ads are also one of the most common ways for getting a virus on your computer.

If I get good use out of a website, for a long time, I usually chip in a donation at some stage; haven't done that here yet, but may in the future.

Well yeah! I know when you install it for the first time it gives you a list of subscriptions. But somehow that O2 one got past it. Which is why I needed to manually block.........

.....what a long and boring story!

The worst ad lately has to be the one when you log on the aaroadwatch celebrating their 21st. It doesn't pick up your IP, so keeps going and going and going. Feck off!!!

    I amn't getting the ESB ad.:p
